The impressive performances of Gabriel Bortoleto have not gone unnoticed in the 2025 Formula 1 season. Driving for Sauber, a team that has been steadily improving, the young Brazilian talent has been making a name for himself not only through his results on the track but also through the intense and exciting duels he manages to engage in with other drivers.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Bortoleto started from seventh position, behind the two Aston Martins and just ahead of a high-caliber driver like Max Verstappen. Not only did he successfully defend his position at the start, but he also crossed the finish line in sixth place, ahead of Lance Stroll, demonstrating remarkable composure, consistency, and maturity. While Verstappen faced numerous challenges over the course of the weekend with his car, this does not diminish the performance of the nearly 21-year-old driver from Osasco, born on October 14, 2004.
Bernie Ecclestone, the former Formula 1 chief, has publicly praised Bortoleto, stating that the young Brazilian is “worth his weight in gold.” Bortoleto first came to wider attention during the previous season in Formula 2, where he competed as a rookie and ultimately emerged as the World Champion. Prior to that, few teams had shown genuine interest in his abilities. In fact, it was Fernando Alonso who initially sponsored him through the A14 Management program starting in 2022. Later, McLaren became involved, facilitating Bortoleto’s Formula 1 debut with Sauber.
While many knew about Alonso’s support and McLaren’s involvement, few were aware that Bernie Ecclestone himself also played a part in helping Bortoleto enter the pinnacle of motorsport. According to Marca.com, Ecclestone expressed pride in his contribution, stating, “I am proud to have given a contribution to Gabriel’s arrival in Formula 1. That young man is worth his weight in gold.”
Motorsport, however, still requires significant financial backing for drivers to progress through the ranks. Bortoleto benefited from key connections and mentorship that helped him reach Formula 1, but now that he has arrived at the highest level, he has the opportunity to prove his talent on merit alone. Any assistance he received early in his career was a reflection of the potential and skill others had recognized in him—a rare ability that many overlooked. Over time, his talent is expected to shine so brightly that it will be impossible for anyone to ignore his capabilities on the world stage.
Bortoleto’s trajectory serves as a testament to the combination of skill, determination, and timely support that is often necessary to succeed in Formula 1. With Bernie Ecclestone and Fernando Alonso among those who recognized his potential early on, and with McLaren facilitating his entry into the sport through Sauber, the young Brazilian now has the platform to demonstrate that he belongs at the very top of motorsport.
