Liam Lawson has identified the turning point at Racing Bulls behind his growth in the most recent races of the 2025 F1 season.

Career-best performance in Baku

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Liam Lawson achieved the best result of his career, starting from third and finishing fifth, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda’s Red Bull. This continued a streak of strong performances. The New Zealand driver, whose future on the grid remains uncertain, pointed to changes made by Racing Bulls as one of the key factors behind his recent improvement.

From Red Bull to Racing Bulls

Lawson began the season at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen but was replaced by Yuki Tsunoda after just two races, returning to Racing Bulls. Initially, he struggled even as teammate to rookie Hadjar. However, he went on to score points in four of the seven races following a performance turning point in Austria.

Confidence and car setup drove growth

Lawson emphasized that increased confidence in the car, thanks to suspension changes introduced at the Red Bull Ring, was one of the main reasons for his improvement. “I felt pretty good and the speed has been there for most of the year, but it was consistency that has improved recently,” he explained.

“I’m very aware that maintaining this continuity in Formula 1 is very difficult, so I’m just trying to keep this form going and learn from what has worked, knowing that difficulties will come sooner or later. But overall, I feel good, the car is fast, and I’m trying to keep progressing along this path,” Lawson added.

Team dynamics and side of the garage

“Recently, things have started to click for us as a team. I changed sides of the garage [compared to 2024], and the relationships you build with the people on your side improve over time, as does my understanding of the car. We made some changes around the Austria period and the car became more comfortable for me, which helped a lot.”

“Looking back on the first half of the year, it has been a process of increasing adaptation as the season progressed. That is probably what led to the results we’re seeing now.”
