Bahrain GP: Toto Wolff calls George Russell power unit failure terrible blow to F1 championship hopes

George Russell, Toto Wolff, Mercedes 2026 F1

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has extended his Formula 1 championship lead over George Russell to 84 points after finishing second in the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, while a late Mercedes power unit failure forced his teammate to retire. What had been shaping up as another double-podium result for Mercedes instead became a potentially decisive moment in the 2026 title fight.

The Bahrain Grand Prix ended with Antonelli in second place after Mercedes worked hard throughout the weekend to bring the W17 Neo into the correct operating window, something that had looked particularly difficult during Friday practice. The team’s earlier struggles had already shown how challenging it was to unlock the Mercedes operating window at Sepang.

Kimi Antonelli extends championship lead to 84 points

Helped by an excellent start and an effective strategy, Andrea Kimi Antonelli produced a strong race to secure second place. George Russell also launched brilliantly from the grid, gaining five positions at the start and initially putting Mercedes in position to challenge for another double podium.

That possibility disappeared when Russell suffered his power unit problem during the closing stages of the race.

The retirement allowed Antonelli to take another major step towards the championship. The Italian now leads his teammate by 84 points with seven Grands Prix remaining, including one weekend featuring a Sprint.

The mathematics of the title fight are therefore becoming increasingly important, with the latest situation also visible in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings. Russell is not mathematically out of contention, but the margin has become increasingly difficult to overcome.

Antonelli satisfied after maximising difficult Mercedes weekend

Antonelli was satisfied with the result after a weekend in which Mercedes never appeared completely comfortable with the W17 Neo.

“I think today we did the maximum possible, congratulations to Red Bull and Max for their incredible weekend,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli said. “We have a lot of work to do and this weekend was difficult, but I’m happy to have brought home second place.”

The only significant blemish on Antonelli’s race came at the penultimate restart. While leading the race at Sepang, he was caught out by both Max Verstappen and George Russell and lost positions to the pair.

Nevertheless, consistency has become one of Antonelli’s greatest strengths during the 2026 season. With 13 podium finishes from the first 16 Grands Prix, the championship leader has been the most consistent finisher at the front of the field.

His Sepang result came at the end of a chaotic race won by Max Verstappen, with the full outcome covered in the Bahrain Grand Prix race report.

Antonelli wants clearer answer on W17 Neo upgrade in Singapore

Despite the valuable second place, Antonelli remains uncertain about Mercedes’ latest upgrade package.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, the Italian explained that the Singapore Grand Prix should provide a much clearer indication of the true quality of the W17 Neo. The different asphalt characteristics are expected to allow Mercedes to interpret the data more effectively than it could at Sepang.

Mercedes is already considering whether it can carry out a direct comparison between specifications at the next round, with Antonelli wanting a clearer answer on how the latest W17 package performs in Singapore.

George Russell suffers another major championship blow

For George Russell, the Bahrain Grand Prix ended in another painful setback.

Toto Wolff was highly critical of Mercedes’ weekend and made clear his frustration with the performance of the new package.

“We lacked speed, we need to understand what we have to do to recover,” Toto Wolff said.

The Mercedes team principal then highlighted the far more serious consequence of Russell’s retirement.

“To make matters worse, George’s power unit failure, which is a terrible event for his championship. One of our worst weekends so far.”

Mercedes has not yet completed a detailed assessment of the power unit failure, meaning the team is currently unable to provide further information about exactly what went wrong.

Russell admits 2026 title is now very unlikely

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia after the race, a dejected George Russell again pointed to the role misfortune has played in his season.

“I needed luck to be on my side, but I was unlucky once again,” George Russell said. “It is very unlikely that I can win. I’ll think race by race and then I’ll see, but I haven’t given up.”

Russell therefore refuses to concede the championship completely, but the combination of Antonelli’s consistency and his own latest reliability setback has fundamentally changed the scale of the task.

Mercedes leaves Sepang with a mixed result. Antonelli’s second place is hugely valuable in championship terms, but Russell’s power unit failure has placed renewed focus on reliability at exactly the point when every remaining race has become critical.

The championship is now increasingly in Antonelli’s hands. Yet while the Italian’s 84-point advantage provides a substantial cushion, Russell’s failure also serves as a reminder that reliability could still play a decisive role during the final seven Grands Prix of the season.
