Austrian GP – Make-or-break moment for Red Bull and Max Verstappen
Red Bull and Max Verstappen are preparing for their home Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Austria with high expectations. The team has chosen this circuit to introduce its most extensive upgrade package of the entire season, an evolution that is expected — or at least hoped — to deliver a significant improvement in performance.
Major upgrades and lessons from recent races
After already introducing a substantial package of developments in Miami at the beginning of May, following an enforced break in the championship calendar, the upgrades arriving in Austria are considered even more important according to sources within the team quoted by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. These modifications are viewed as a clear step forward compared to the updates introduced earlier in the season.
Team principal Laurent Mekies reflected on the previous race in Barcelona, where Max Verstappen finished fourth, and stressed that the new components will need to help Red Bull close the gap to the leading teams. At the same time, he acknowledged that further developments will still be required if the Milton Keynes-based squad wants to compete on equal terms with rivals such as Mercedes.
One particularly important aspect of the upgrade package concerns the weight of the RB22, the car driven by Max Verstappen and teammate Isack Hadjar. At the start of the season, the car was reportedly around 12 kilograms overweight. Thanks to the updates scheduled for Austria, Red Bull expects the car to move much closer to its target weight, effectively completing a lengthy weight-reduction programme.
Under this year’s technical regulations, the minimum car weight is set at 768 kilograms, including the driver’s weight. Reaching that limit remains a key technical objective, as every kilogram saved can contribute to extracting more performance from the car across a race weekend.
The importance of the upgrades for Verstappen’s future
These technical developments carry significance beyond pure performance. They are also seen as an important factor in maintaining motivation and confidence within the team. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has yet to publicly confirm his long-term commitment to Red Bull, and team management is eager to receive a positive indication from the Dutch driver regarding his future, particularly with an eye on the 2027 season.
Although Max Verstappen remains under contract until the end of 2028, performance-related clauses could potentially allow him to consider alternative opportunities should the team fail to deliver competitive results. For that reason, the Austrian upgrade package arrives at a particularly sensitive moment, with Red Bull hoping to demonstrate tangible progress and reinforce the driver’s belief in the project.
The Austrian Grand Prix weekend therefore represents a crucial turning point for the team. Between championship ambitions, technical optimisation and the long-term future of one of Formula 1’s most successful drivers, the Red Bull Ring could provide some important answers about the direction Red Bull is heading in for the remainder of the season and beyond.
