F1 on the brink of a management shake-up
Formula 1 seems poised for a real upheaval. The situation originates from Aston Martin’s critical performance, currently the worst team on the grid. What was expected to be a superteam capable of competing for race wins and even the championship has instead become a team struggling to complete race distances. Responsibility for this disaster has largely been attributed to the Honda Power Unit, which has been working intensively to find solutions.
Action is urgently needed, perhaps even from a management perspective. Adrian Newey’s appointment as Team Principal toward the end of last season has always appeared to be a temporary move. Given the ongoing crisis, it is possible that the team is seeking a way to allow the most famous engineer in the paddock to focus exclusively on the AMR26 car. This is where Jonathan Wheatley could come into play.
The Wheatley-Binotto relationship rumors
It is worth noting that Wheatley’s transfer from Germany back to the United Kingdom would not be immediate, and for this reason, it would not be considered an emergency move. A “gardening period” is inevitable, as he remains responsible for all trackside operations for Audi F1. The team’s technical secrets — along with the “57 ongoing projects” — would therefore remain secure during the transition.
But what could motivate Jonathan Wheatley to move to Aston Martin, leaving a team that, by contrast, is performing surprisingly well this part of the season? According to BILD, there are two main reasons: on one hand, there is the desire of his family to return to the United Kingdom; on the other, there have reportedly been genuine disagreements between him and Mattia Binotto, with conflicts arising over “particular technical and managerial issues.”
In any case, the situation should be resolved in the coming hours, the German newspaper writes, as Formula 1 fans await confirmation of whether Jonathan Wheatley will indeed leave Audi F1 and take on the role at Aston Martin.
The 2026 Formula 1 season is proving that the battle in the boardrooms is just as fierce as the one on the asphalt. As Aston Martin fights to save its season and Audi looks to maintain its surprising momentum, the resolution of the Wheatley-Binotto saga will likely dictate the mid-season narrative. For now, the eyes of the F1 world remain fixed on Germany and Silverstone to see which domino falls first.
