Formula 1 is preparing for major changes, but for fans of traditional engines, there’s no good news. The debate about bringing back the powerful V10 engines has now faded away: the evolution of motorsport is heading in a different direction—more sustainable and aligned with new global demands.
A return of V10 engines in Formula 1 is, at least for now, out of the question. The FIA has been unable to reach an agreement with manufacturers on a possible change to future regulations. Among the main opponents of a return to traditional combustion is Audi, which is ready to enter the sport fully complying with the new rules scheduled for 2026.
In this context, an interview given by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner to Süddeutsche Zeitung at the end of March takes on particular importance. Gernot Döllner stated:
“Look at what has happened in just the past two years. At first, things couldn’t move fast enough with electric mobility. And then people said again: it will never amount to anything. But these are just fluctuations along a long journey. The future will definitely be electric.” – he pointed out.
Words that confirm the direction now taken: even in Formula 1, the future will necessarily involve hybrids and, progressively, electric power.
