Audi in F1, but Sauber won’t disappear completely in 2026
On Friday, Formula 1 released the official race numbers chosen by the drivers for the 2026 season, highlighting three main updates. Among them, Arvid Lindblad, the only rookie in the championship, will take over Isack Hadjar’s seat at Racing Bulls, with the Frenchman moving to Red Bull. Aside from this change, the driver lineup remains largely stable, while the constructors’ grid will see new entries.
Audi and… Sauber
Alongside Cadillac, which will increase the number of participating teams to eleven, Audi is set to make its Formula 1 debut with its own power units. Unlike the American team, a true rookie on the grid, the German manufacturer has acquired Sauber, which after 33 years will no longer appear in F1—at least, not entirely.
In the FIA’s official list of registered teams and drivers, the team name will appear as “Audi Revolut F1 Team”, as previously announced. However, the company will also, somewhat surprisingly, retain the designation Sauber Motorsport AG. This is not an issue caused by Audi, but rather a matter related to the ongoing process of changing the legal entity, which has yet to be fully completed.
As a result, while Audi officially enters Formula 1 in 2026, Sauber’s legacy and name will continue to appear in some capacity, marking a transitional phase in the team’s evolution on the grid.
This organizational overlap ensures that while the Audi brand will take center stage on the bodywork and in the pits, the Swiss heritage of the Sauber Motorsport AG entity continues to provide the foundation for the team’s ambitious future in the pinnacle of motorsport.
