Aston Martin struggles: Jenson Button believes Adrian Newey will turn things around. Aston Martin's future is in safe hands, says Jenson Button as he praises Adrian Newey.

The history of Formula 1 is full of teams that have risen from nowhere to become race winners and title contenders. It is also filled with ambitious projects that invested heavily but failed to deliver the expected results. For now, Aston Martin unfortunately belongs to the latter category.

Despite Lawrence Stroll’s enormous financial commitment and the construction of a state-of-the-art factory, the Silverstone-based team has emerged as the slowest outfit on the grid and began Formula 1’s new technical era well behind its rivals.

Aston Martin’s difficult start

Aston Martin’s Managing Technical Partner, Adrian Newey, recently admitted that the team’s current car has not met expectations. He also revealed that a heavily updated B-specification car is planned for the Hungarian Grand Prix, a package that could prove crucial not only for improving performance but also for convincing Fernando Alonso to remain with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season.

Even so, Aston Martin ambassador and 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button remains fully convinced that Newey is the right man to transform the project, although he believes everyone will need to be patient before the results begin to appear.

Jenson Button: “Adrian Newey is the best”

“It’s tough, but I think, in a way, it was to be expected. Adrian joined the team very late, and the agreement with Honda was also finalised very late, despite it being an entirely new project for them. Other teams have been working on this power unit for a long time,” Button told Marca.

“But with Adrian and Lawrence leading the team, exciting things will happen. It will take time, and it’s frustrating not to be competitive, but we’ll have a strong package in the future. And I hope Fernando stays because I have enormous respect for him and I really admire what he’s capable of doing with a racing car.”

Button then explained why he believes Adrian Newey remains Formula 1’s greatest technical mind.

“Newey thinks differently. He’s extraordinary. For the ideas he comes up with, and because he’s won championships with different teams, he’s the best in the business. He’ll identify the weaknesses and keep pushing the limits,” he continued.

“He’s a genuine genius, and Aston Martin has found exactly the right person.”
