Aston Martin is setting its sights high with the vision of Lawrence Stroll and the technical expertise of Andy Cowell. The team is making significant structural and technical investments to consistently return the “green team” to the top tier of Formula 1.
Aston Martin means business. While excitement is growing among fans of the “green team” and of Fernando Alonso ahead of the 2026 season, the CEO and Team Principal of the Silverstone-based squad is already planning for the long term, aiming to keep the team competitive at the top for several years. As highlighted in previous analyses, Aston Martin intends to fight for podiums starting next season, building gradually towards the ultimate goal of winning a Formula 1 World Championship.
Over the past year, Lawrence Stroll has made significant investments in the team’s facilities, including a new factory at Silverstone and a state-of-the-art wind tunnel, as well as in personnel. The hiring of high-profile aerodynamic engineer Adrian Newey further underscores the seriousness of Stroll’s project. However, in Formula 1, spending more does not automatically lead to victories. Andy Cowell, formerly of Mercedes, is fully aware of this reality.
Cowell’s role is to temper the excitement surrounding the team and, above all, to emphasize that Aston Martin needs a sustainable long-term project. Only through this careful planning can Lawrence Stroll’s ambitions be realized by the “engine wizard” who previously contributed significantly to Mercedes’ success during the turbo-hybrid era.
Aston Martin, Cowell: “We want to be strong in the coming years”
After the many highs of the 2023 season, the past two years have not been as favorable for the British team. This is why Cowell’s goal is to create a winning project that allows Aston Martin to consistently compete in the upper echelons of the championship standings.
“Change is not a small matter. We are racing while simultaneously designing a car for next year, and adding changes on top of that creates extra work. Implementing modifications requires additional effort,” Cowell explained to RacingNews365.
“There are always obstacles in the process. There’s always the feeling of, ‘Do we really need this?’ It’s about maintaining a medium- to long-term focus because it’s not just about 2026. There are other championships, and we want to be competitive across the board,” the Team Principal added.
“It’s in this area that Lawrence excels, having the vision to invest further with a medium- to long-term perspective. You don’t invest in a wind tunnel for a short-term plan. You don’t invest in a campus like ours if you only plan to stay a short while. Lawrence has a very clear vision. We’re all eager for results, but the investment supports a sustainable long-term approach,” concluded Cowell, highlighting the team’s careful planning and strategic mindset.
The road to success will not be immediate or without challenges, but the building blocks Aston Martin is putting in place today could prove decisive in the near future. The combination of fan enthusiasm, Lawrence Stroll’s vision, and the expertise within the team forms a potentially explosive mix.
Now, it remains to be seen whether the “green team” can truly convert these promises into tangible results, with the dream of writing a new and significant chapter in Formula 1 history.
