George Russell now keeps fans waiting? The British driver recently took a brief break from the Formula 1 paddock, announcing he would head straight on vacation for ten days of rest. Regarding his contract renewal, Russell indicated that the deal will eventually be finalized, noting that he has already waited 12 months and can afford to wait a little longer.
His statement was somewhat cryptic, and Toto Wolff has taken his time patiently waiting for a potential last-minute availability from Max Verstappen. Now, George Russell seems determined not to overlook this key ‘detail’ in his contract negotiations.
Currently, George Russell is considered the best top-tier driver available on the market without contractual restrictions. Mercedes is confidently preparing for the new regulatory cycle starting soon, making this pairing a perfect match for both the team and the driver. The main issue left to resolve is the financial package, with Russell aiming for a salary equal to his peers, as he believes he has nothing to envy in drivers like Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.
According to information emerging from the United Kingdom, Russell is expected to earn around £30 million per year, a figure consistent with the salaries of top young talents such as Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.
Sky Sports UK has also revealed an interesting detail about other teams courting George Russell. In addition to Aston Martin, Cadillac has reportedly expressed interest in the British driver. Cadillac has yet to announce their driver line-up for the 2026 season and are actively exploring options, including reaching out to Russell to gauge his availability.
This development adds an additional layer of intrigue to the ongoing contract negotiations between Mercedes and George Russell, as the talented 25-year-old assesses his options ahead of the new era of Formula 1 regulations.
