The penalties received by Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were not the only ones handed out by the stewards during the Mexican GP. After the race which was held at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, the stewards chose to penalize Franco Colapinto for the incident involving Liam Lawson.
The Argentine driver from Williams was also involved in some very interesting duels that were well-received by the fans on the Mexican circuit. Driver number 43 continues to gain support from enthusiasts as they await news on whether he will have a seat for 2025.
The reason for the penalty
At the conclusion of the Mexican GP, the twentieth event of the season, the stewards decided to impose a ten-second penalty and two points on Franco Colapinto’s superlicense. “Colapinto was attempting to overtake Liam Lawson on the outside of Turn 1. He was not fully alongside at the apex and did not have the right to be ahead at the exit of the corner,” the statement read.
“Lawson defended himself aggressively but never went off the track and left Franco Colapinto the necessary space, even though Colapinto went off track. Lawson then left space at Turn 2 while Colapinto pushed him wide at the exit of Turn 2, ultimately making contact with Lawson’s front wing.”
“Although the stewards noted that the duel was fair, the fact that Franco Colapinto forced the issue when he was unable to complete the pass led the stewards to deem him at fault.” – the statement issues at the end of the Mexico City Grand Prix informs.
