Andrea Stella has praised Lando Norris for offering to help Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Grand Prix after the McLaren team principal had described their costly Sprint collision as “unacceptable”. The incident at Marina Bay wiped out valuable points for McLaren at a time when Red Bull is rapidly closing the gap in the Constructors’ Championship.
The gesture from Lando Norris during Sunday’s Grand Prix appeared to underline the team-first approach Andrea Stella wants from both of his drivers. Although Oscar Piastri ultimately managed to pass Lewis Hamilton without assistance, the McLaren boss made it clear that he expects similar cooperation again in the future.
McLaren’s disastrous Singapore Sprint collision
Singapore proved to be a particularly disappointing weekend for McLaren, above all because of the extraordinary intra-team collision on the final lap of Saturday’s Sprint. An ambitious attack by Lando Norris on Oscar Piastri sent both McLarens into a spin, turning what had been fourth and fifth positions into a retirement for the Australian and eighth place for the reigning world champion.
McLaren effectively lost eight points in the space of a single corner, far from ideal at a stage of the season when Red Bull continues to accumulate victories and has moved increasingly close in the Constructors’ standings. The collision added to what has become a difficult period for the team, with McLaren’s recent decline and costly Singapore mistakes increasing the pressure on the Woking squad.
Lando Norris offers to help Oscar Piastri
Since taking charge of McLaren, Andrea Stella has consistently demanded that his drivers place the interests of the team ahead of their individual ambitions. The Italian team principal was understandably furious about what happened on Saturday at Marina Bay, and his message to the drivers evidently had an impact.
During the closing laps of Sunday’s Grand Prix, once Lando Norris realised he no longer had a realistic chance of reaching the podium, he repeatedly offered to help Oscar Piastri in the Australian’s pursuit of Lewis Hamilton for fifth position.
Oscar Piastri eventually managed to overtake the Ferrari driver without requiring assistance from Lando Norris, but Andrea Stella appreciated the gesture. It came after Lando Norris apologised following the Singapore Sprint clash, while McLaren continued its internal discussions over the incident.
Andrea Stella calls Singapore incident ‘unacceptable’
“I described what happened on Saturday as unacceptable,” Andrea Stella said at the end of the Singapore weekend. “However, I was very encouraged by the fact that our drivers also quickly expressed the same position. We are now aligned in our desire to take the team forward through a joint effort between the team and the drivers.
“The discussions [about what happened in the Sprint] are not over yet, but not because we need to go back and discuss whether Lando was alongside Oscar: that is not the important aspect. For me, the important aspect is the reflection that all parties involved – the team and the drivers – will have to make about managing the team together, constantly putting the team’s interests ahead of any individual interest, including from inside the cockpit.”
The collision came during a weekend in which McLaren could ill afford to throw away points. With its rivals applying increasing pressure, every result has become more significant as the battle develops in the 2026 Formula 1 championship.
Stella expects Norris-Piastri cooperation to continue
Andrea Stella was equally clear when discussing Lando Norris’ offer to assist Oscar Piastri during the Grand Prix.
“Norris offering to help Piastri? I’m pleased that Lando, at a certain point in the race, adopted this mindset. It is what I expect,” Andrea Stella explained. “It is what the thousand people who work at McLaren expect from our drivers; it is positive that we had this example.
“I definitely expect this to happen again in the future, whether it happens over the radio, behind closed doors during meetings or when defining race strategy.”
Andrea Stella’s position leaves little ambiguity over how McLaren intends to manage Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri from this point onwards. Individual competition remains part of Formula 1, but after the costly Marina Bay collision, the team principal wants McLaren’s collective interests to take priority whenever the two drivers are fighting on track.
