Andrea Kimi Antonelli honoured as face of Italian motorsport but withdraws from Monaco charity football match
The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola hosted a special celebration on Saturday 30 May marking the 45th anniversary of the Fondazione Nazionale Piloti. The event brought together key figures from the world of motorsport, including Formula 1 championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who attended as a special guest.
During the ceremony, the National Piloti organisation awarded Andrea Kimi Antonelli with a special recognition presented by Middle East Manager Andrea Zucchini, naming him as the new face of Italian motorsport. The honour highlights his rapid rise in Formula 1 and his growing importance as a symbol of Italy’s future in top-level racing.
Despite Italy’s rich and historic motorsport tradition, the country has rarely produced drivers capable of consistently competing for Formula 1 world championships. Only two Italian drivers have ever won the Formula 1 World Championship: Giuseppe “Nino” Farina in 1950, the inaugural season of Formula 1, and Alberto Ascari, who secured back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli carries Italy’s Formula 1 hopes
Since those early successes, Italy’s presence at the very top of Formula 1 has been limited, making Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s rise particularly significant for national motorsport fans. The young Mercedes driver is increasingly seen as the figure capable of reigniting Italian hopes for a future world championship challenge.
Speaking during the 45th anniversary press conference of the National Piloti foundation in Imola, Andrea Kimi Antonelli reflected on his start to the season and the challenges ahead in a long Formula 1 campaign.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained that it has been a positive opening to the year, although he emphasized that there is still a long road ahead. He highlighted the importance of consistency and staying focused as the season progresses, particularly with a more demanding race schedule following the early-season gaps.
He noted that managing the breaks between races had not been easy, particularly during the periods leading up to Miami and Canada. According to Andrea Kimi Antonelli, long periods away from racing can disrupt rhythm, making it more difficult to maintain peak performance once competition resumes.
Looking ahead, Andrea Kimi Antonelli pointed out that the upcoming phase of the season includes a more continuous run of races before the summer break, which he believes will help him stay in competitive form.
He also stressed the importance of mental discipline, stating that his family has always taught him to remain grounded, humble and fully focused on the ultimate goal. Andrea Kimi Antonelli underlined that nothing is ever finished until the checkered flag is crossed, and that maintaining concentration without distractions is essential throughout the championship.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli declines charity football match in Monaco
Beyond his recognition from National Piloti, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Saturday schedule was filled with additional commitments, including a trip to Brisighella where he received the prestigious Trofeo Bandini.
However, during the Imola celebrations, Andrea Kimi Antonelli also made a light-hearted but notable announcement in an interview with Sky Sport F1 journalist Mara Sangiorgio.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli confirmed that he will not take part in the charity football match “Racing Stars Football Cup”, scheduled for Wednesday 3 June at 15:30 in Monte Carlo, just ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
Explaining his decision, Andrea Kimi Antonelli joked that it was better for him to focus on driving rather than football, adding that the ball should be left to those who actually know how to handle it.
His humorous comment sparked further light-hearted reactions, with some suggesting that Mercedes may also have preferred to avoid any unnecessary risk ahead of a crucial race weekend, especially given that Andrea Kimi Antonelli is currently leading the Formula 1 World Championship. However, the driver’s own explanation remains the official and more playful version of events.
Regardless of his absence from the charity match, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s growing status as the face of Italian motorsport continues to gain momentum, with his performances on track reinforcing why he is increasingly seen as one of the most important young talents in Formula 1.
