Franco Colapinto is not repeating his 2024 exploits
“If I said I’m satisfied with Franco Colapinto’s performance, I would be lying.” Flavio Briatore, advisor and now Alpine’s team principal after Oliver Oakes resigned for personal reasons, did not hide after the Spanish GP that Franco Colapinto has yet to make a mark in the three races he has participated in so far. On the contrary, he has already caused significant damage due to the crash in Q1 at Imola’s Tamburello corner.
The Argentine driver inherited the Alpine seat alongside Pierre Gasly starting from the Italian GP, but at Imola, Monaco, and Spain, the Frenchman clearly outperformed him, securing an eighth place finish in Barcelona—the best second result for Alpine so far, with only Pierre Gasly scoring points. The French team is currently last in the Constructors’ Championship with 10 points, six fewer than the Sauber-Aston Martin pairing tied at sixteen.
In the latest episode of his blog, British journalist Joe Saward highlighted rumors of potential Alpine interest in Sergio Perez. The ex-Red Bull driver is on Cadillac’s radar for 2026, but his experience combined with generous sponsors supporting Checo’s career make him an attractive prospect for Flavio Briatore, who might want to pair another solid driver alongside Pierre Gasly—someone who has always been reliable except for the tough period at Red Bull when he had to go head-to-head with Max Verstappen. If these rumors materialize, Alpine would see a reunion of two former Red Bull drivers, Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez.
