Alex Dunne’s courageous move: leaving McLaren to pursue Formula 1. Alex Dunne has voluntarily left the McLaren junior program to take control of his path to F1.

McLaren MCL39, 2025 F1 car

Alex Dunne has chosen to take his destiny into his own hands. His journey is one aimed squarely at Formula 1, and every step he takes—even the riskiest—is part of a broader, carefully considered plan.

A strategic decision to avoid being sidelined

The twenty-year-old confirmed that his departure from the McLaren junior program in October 2025 was entirely voluntary.

“It was very much my decision,” he explained to Balls.ie, clarifying how the prospect of spending 2026 on the sidelines convinced him to change course.

With McLaren seats already allocated, Alex Dunne preferred to free himself from a path that could have slowed him down. Initially, this choice caused some hesitation for his father, but the young driver considers it part of a wider strategy to establish himself permanently in Formula 1.

Gratitude toward McLaren and lessons from champions

Despite the separation, Alex Dunne keeps a positive memory of his time at Woking. He spoke with great respect about Zak Brown and the “truly special” opportunities he received, including his FP1 debut in Austria, where he finished just two tenths behind Oscar Piastri.

Working alongside Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Dunne recounts, was enlightening: two “ordinary people” with extraordinary approaches to a race weekend that make all the difference. This experience is a valuable foundation that Dunne carries with him as he builds the next chapter of his career.

An open future between Red Bull, Alpine, and the F2 challenge

At the time of leaving McLaren, Alex Dunne seemed close to joining the Red Bull junior program, but the move did not materialize. His name has also been linked to Alpine, who may be considering alternatives for the future of Franco Colapinto in 2026.

Meanwhile, the Irish driver is preparing for his second season in Formula 2 with Rodin Motorsport, with a clear goal: aiming for the championship. The absence of constraints from an F1 junior program may offer him valuable freedom in negotiations, just as the 2027 driver market begins to take shape.

Leaving McLaren was not a leap into the void, but an investment in his own future. Alex Dunne chose to take risks today so he would not remain stuck tomorrow, maintaining strong relationships with those who supported him while opening new opportunities for his path toward Formula 1.

Now everything hinges on Formula 2: a championship win could turn his bold move into a definitive ticket into the F1 Circus. It is a daring choice, but one perfectly aligned with the ambition of a driver who refuses to be a spectator in his own story.

Alex Dunne’s decision to step away from the security of a top-tier academy highlights the ruthless strategic thinking required to break into modern Formula 1. By prioritizing track time and negotiating freedom over the prestige of a junior contract, he has positioned himself as one of the most intriguing free agents on the 2026 grid. While the gamble is high, a standout performance in Formula 2 this season would validate his “act of courage,” proving that sometimes, the best way to move forward in the paddock is to step out on your own.
