Mercedes refuses to abandon troubled upgrade as Austin becomes decisive test

George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes W17, 2026 F1

Mercedes will use the United States Grand Prix in Austin as an important technical test, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli both set to return to the latest aerodynamic configuration of the W17. The objective goes beyond extracting more performance from the current car: Mercedes wants to solve its balance problems and understand whether the philosophy introduced at Sepang can help define the technical direction of its 2027 Formula 1 project.

Ferrari will not be the only leading team using Austin as a development laboratory. Mercedes has decided to continue evaluating the W17 concept introduced in Malaysia rather than abandon it after an inconclusive Singapore weekend, believing that the package still contains performance that has not yet been consistently unlocked.

Mercedes believes W17 upgrade has potential despite balance problems

Singapore did not provide every answer Mercedes had hoped for, but it allowed the engineers to narrow down some of the difficulties affecting the updated car.

The problem does not necessarily appear to be a lack of performance from the new components themselves. Instead, Mercedes has struggled to find a set-up that allows the package to operate effectively and consistently.

That distinction is particularly important because information collected from the W17 is also expected to influence the development of the next car. Mercedes has already acknowledged that there remains untapped potential in its W17 development programme, making the final races particularly valuable for understanding how much can still be extracted from the concept.

Singapore comparison exposed Mercedes’ operating-window challenge

The comparison between the two aerodynamic configurations at Marina Bay represented an important stage in the evaluation process.

Mercedes used the available components to compare the previous specification with the updated version in quick succession, requiring a significant operational effort from the team. The mechanics worked for two days preparing the cars so that engineers could gather useful information about the W17’s behaviour.

Deputy team principal Bradley Lord explained that the work helped Mercedes identify more precisely the conditions in which the car failed to reach the correct balance window.

This is now the central issue the team must address. An aerodynamic package may offer a theoretical performance advantage, but it can only be effective if the car can remain within a sufficiently broad operating window to deliver that performance repeatedly.

Mercedes showed stronger upgrade potential in qualifying than the race

The findings from the 17th round of the championship highlighted an important difference between qualifying and race performance.

Over one lap, the new configuration allowed Mercedes to extract more of the available potential. During the race, however, the team could not maintain the same level of competitiveness with equal consistency.

Kimi Antonelli still demonstrated encouraging pace, although he could not reach Max Verstappen’s benchmark. The Italian nevertheless secured another important result in Singapore, where his podium strengthened his championship position.

The overall picture suggests Mercedes may have identified a promising development direction without yet understanding it well enough to convert its potential into a stable advantage.

When the W17 reaches the correct balance window, it can produce strong performance. When it moves outside that window, its competitiveness can deteriorate quickly.

Austin gives Mercedes two updated W17s for comparison

The Circuit of the Americas will provide another opportunity to study the package, this time without needing to split the specification between the two drivers.

In Singapore, Antonelli was the only Mercedes driver running the latest specification, meaning a direct comparison with George Russell could not be conducted under identical technical conditions.

Running the updated configuration on both cars at Austin will significantly expand Mercedes’ data set. Engineers will be able to determine whether the behaviour observed on the Marina Bay street circuit can be reproduced at a very different venue.

COTA’s varied characteristics make the weekend particularly useful for such an evaluation. The United States Grand Prix at Austin combines high-speed direction changes, slower corners, significant elevation changes and an occasionally uneven surface.

Feedback from both Russell and Antonelli will therefore be important in separating the inherent characteristics of the aerodynamic package from problems caused primarily by set-up.

Mercedes needs more than a fast lap from the new package

Lap time alone will not determine whether the experiment is successful.

Mercedes needs to understand how repeatable the performance is and how easily the W17 can remain inside its optimum operating window over different fuel loads, tyres and track conditions.

Lord confirmed that Mercedes intends to continue down this development path because the configuration still appears to offer room for improvement.

The pressure to understand it quickly has also increased because Red Bull has returned to competitive form. Mercedes cannot simply slow the development process while its rivals continue progressing.

Red Bull’s recovery has been closely connected to technical development, with the RB22 improving through two major development steps before emerging as a front-running threat.

The bigger target for Mercedes is its 2027 Formula 1 car

Mercedes’ decision to retain the latest W17 upgrades is not solely about performance in the closing races of 2026.

The greater value of the experiment could lie in the information transferred to the 2027 project. Engineers want to establish whether the aerodynamic principles introduced at Sepang can form a useful foundation for the next Mercedes.

Antonelli had already outlined that perspective after Singapore, confirming that both Mercedes drivers were expected to use the new package in Austin.

The young Italian believes there is still more potential to explore and that understanding which direction to follow is particularly important before the next car is finalised.

Toto Wolff shares that view but remains cautious. Mercedes must first analyse the results and determine whether the data genuinely justifies continuing along the same technical path.

Spa precedent shows Mercedes is prepared to abandon wrong direction

Mercedes has already demonstrated this season that it will not persist with a development simply because significant work has gone into producing it.

At Spa-Francorchamps, the team quickly abandoned a solution that failed to provide the expected guarantees.

The difference with the latest package is Mercedes’ belief that there is enough underlying potential to justify further evaluation despite the difficulties experienced so far.

That approach is particularly relevant given the strength the W17 has shown during much of the season. Earlier in the campaign, the scale of the Mercedes W17’s advantage became one of the defining technical stories of 2026, making its more recent balance difficulties especially significant.

Austin will help determine Mercedes’ next technical direction

Austin therefore represents more than another championship round for Mercedes.

The team wants to discover whether the W17’s operating window can be widened, making the performance already identified under favourable conditions easier to access and more consistent.

At the same time, engineers must establish whether the aerodynamic principles introduced at Sepang deserve to be developed further for the 2027 car.

Mercedes’ championship advantage gives the team some freedom to invest in learning without abandoning its immediate sporting objectives, but that margin does not remove the need for clear technical answers.

The challenge is to transform a promising solution into a reliable technical reference. If the Austin data confirms the positive indications seen in Singapore, Mercedes can continue with greater confidence. If it does not, the team will have to reconsider at least part of the assumptions behind its latest aerodynamic direction.
