Alex Albon completed the 2024 season, once more bearing the burden of being the reference driver for Williams’ results. Another year in which the historic English team produced a non-competitive car, fighting for points positions. The Thai driver knows this well and has become a master at handling such situations.
Albon managed to score points in only 4 races. His best result was a seventh-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, benefiting from incidents involving Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz. His results do not fully reflect his season. The car was limited, but Alex consistently delivered strong performances, aiming to score points in every possible race. He finished the championship with 12 points, securing sixteenth place in the standings.
A small personal milestone was winning the “Overtake of the Year” award, as voted by fans. His move in Canada, overtaking two cars on the final corner in wet conditions, remains one of the most impressive and challenging maneuvers in recent years. While this award likely doesn’t satisfy him, it underscores his skill behind the wheel.
The Comparison with Teammates
In the 2024 season, Alex Albon shared the garage with two teammates, Logan Sargeant and Franco Colapinto. With the arrival of the Argentine driver from the Monza GP onward, competition within Williams increased, and the Thai driver was slightly affected.
The battle with Logan Sargeant was one-sided. Race results show a 12-2 score in Alex Albon’s favor, and the gap was even greater in qualifying, at 13-0. The American driver proved not to be at the Formula 1 level, leading to his replacement mid-season. During their time together this year, Alex Albon scored 4 points, while Logan Sargeant managed none.
With Franco Colapinto, the story was slightly different, as the two drivers were closer in terms of performance. Their head-to-head record in races ended 4-4, while in qualifying, Alex Albon led with a 7-2 score. In terms of points, the Thai driver also came out ahead, scoring 8 points compared to Franco’s 5.
For the first time in years, Alex Albon faced a teammate capable of challenging him more significantly. It became apparent that he wasn’t always performing miracles, as the car proved more competitive than usual on certain circuits. It will be interesting to see next year’s comparison with the Spaniard Carlos Sainz.
