The start of the new Formula 1 season is getting closer. In these final weeks of February, we will begin to step into the last season of ground-effect cars with team presentations and pre-season testing. Alexander Albon, Williams driver, gave his perspective on what 2025 could look like, also discussing the performance of the Grove-based team’s car.
The season, set to begin on March 16 in Australia at the Albert Park circuit, is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years. Four teams are fighting for the Constructors’ Championship, and eight drivers are contending for the Drivers’ title. McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes are all in the mix. As we see every year, a fierce midfield battle is also expected.
That is precisely where we could see Williams, one of the most historic teams in Formula 1. This year, however, they will have a very solid driver lineup. On one side, Alexander Albon, who has been with the team since 2022 and is well integrated into the Grove environment. On the other, Carlos Sainz, who, after four years with Ferrari, is preparing for a new challenge.
Both drivers have everything it takes to bring Williams back to the midfield. It’s worth remembering that in 2024, the team finished only ninth in the Constructors’ standings, with enormous expenses due to numerous crashes in the latter part of the season.
Just a few days ago, to prepare as best as possible for the new racing season, Williams took to the track with the new FW47. The two drivers completed their first laps at Silverstone and shared their initial impressions of the car’s behavior. Additionally, the official livery will be unveiled on Tuesday, February 18, at an event at London’s O2 Arena.
“This year will have the most tightly packed grid in Formula 1 history,” the Thai driver told Sky Sports. “It will be very exciting, but I don’t think we’ll be at the front. Given how McLaren finished last year, it will be very interesting. I’d love for us to take a step forward compared to last year, though it’s hard to quantify.”
“I’d like to fight in the upper half of the midfield. We’ll see how intense the midfield battle is this year—I think we’ll be closer to the top teams as well.”
