On Friday in Canada, Kimi Antonelli appeared in good shape and confident after the difficulties of the past races. The Canadian weekend comes after a series of very tough events for Kimi Antonelli. The Bolognese driver struggled to be competitive in the three European rounds, recording two retirements and an eighteenth place finish. In the cases of Imola and Spain, it should be noted that his Mercedes let him down due to reliability issues.
Expectations for the last three weekends were different, especially because, being European tracks, Kimi Antonelli had the opportunity to test there before F1. The situation is different for Montreal, a new circuit for the young Mercedes driver, who seems to have grasped the layout very quickly.
He said that the day was good for the team overall. Both their work on the single lap and on long runs were competitive, and he felt comfortable with the car. They will continue to push to be in a good position for tomorrow but already have a solid foundation to build on.
Kimi Antonelli optimistic ahead of qualifying
Pirelli decided to bring a trio of compounds to Canada already seen this year: the C4 (Hard), C5 (Medium), and C6 (Soft) tires, which drivers had already used at Imola and Monaco. Particular difficulties had been encountered using the softest tire, but Antonelli believes he has improved in this regard, putting himself in a good position ahead of qualifying.
He said the track is new to him and that he really enjoyed it. It’s not the easiest circuit to drive, especially in FP1 when the track was very dirty. He kept improving throughout the day and by the end of FP2 felt comfortable. He also made progress in his ability to make the most of the C6 tire, something he struggled with at Imola and Monaco but worked hard on today and feels he made significant improvements.
