Adrian Newey reveals the mental ability that makes Fernando Alonso an F1 great

Fernando Alonso, Adrian Newey 2024

Adrian Newey has placed Fernando Alonso among Formula 1’s greatest drivers of all time, revealing that the Aston Martin veteran possesses an exceptional ability to process information while driving at the limit. Speaking during the FIA press conference at the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin, the renowned British designer explained why Fernando Alonso’s mental capacity sets him apart from many of his rivals.

For Adrian Newey, greatness is not simply a question of outright speed or natural talent. What distinguishes the most exceptional Formula 1 drivers is their ability to understand everything happening around them while extracting maximum performance from the car, almost as though the basic act of driving has become automatic.

Adrian Newey explains why Fernando Alonso is one of F1’s greatest drivers

During the FIA press conference on 23 October at the Circuit of The Americas, Adrian Newey was asked to assess Fernando Alonso after their first season working together at Aston Martin.

The British designer offered an unequivocal assessment of the two-time World Champion, comparing his qualities with those of the exceptional drivers he has encountered throughout his career.

“Fernando is undoubtedly one of the greatest of all time. Like all the great drivers I’ve been fortunate enough to work with, one of the things that sets him apart is the mental processing capacity he still has available while driving,” Adrian Newey explained.

The observation highlights an aspect of Formula 1 performance that is often less visible than lap times or qualifying results. A driver must process an enormous amount of information while controlling a car at extremely high speed, with relatively little time available to consider each decision.

According to Adrian Newey, the greatest drivers appear capable of performing the fundamental tasks of driving almost instinctively, leaving their conscious minds free to analyse more complicated situations.

Fernando Alonso’s mental processing ability impresses Adrian Newey

Adrian Newey expanded on the difference between simply driving a Formula 1 car quickly and possessing the awareness required to adapt continuously during a race.

“Obviously, you need a certain amount of brainpower to drive the car in the first place, but with truly exceptional drivers, you get the impression that all of this happens at a subconscious level, leaving the conscious mind free to process everything else: understanding how the tyres are behaving, reading how the race is unfolding and modifying their driving style to suit the balance of the car at that particular moment,” the Aston Martin designer explained.

These abilities are particularly valuable in Formula 1 because the behaviour of a car changes constantly throughout a Grand Prix. Tyre condition, fuel load, track evolution and aerodynamic balance can all influence the way a driver needs to approach individual corners and manage performance over a race distance.

The ability to recognise these changes and adapt without losing concentration represents an important advantage. For Adrian Newey, Fernando Alonso belongs firmly among the drivers capable of combining exceptional car control with a sophisticated understanding of the race.

“Fernando absolutely belongs in that category,” Adrian Newey concluded.

It is a significant endorsement from a designer whose career has included collaborations with World Champions such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Mika Häkkinen, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

Why the Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso partnership matters for Aston Martin

The collaboration between Adrian Newey and Fernando Alonso has long been regarded as one of the most promising elements of Aston Martin’s ambitious Formula 1 project. Combining the experience of a celebrated car designer with that of a two-time World Champion gives the British team considerable expertise as it works to establish itself among the leading competitors.

Under Lawrence Stroll’s ownership, Aston Martin has invested heavily in facilities, technology and personnel with the ambition of becoming a championship-winning team. The organisation has assembled substantial resources, but its progress has also demonstrated that investment alone cannot guarantee immediate success in Formula 1.

Even the smallest mistakes can carry significant competitive consequences, particularly when rival teams are working with similarly advanced technology and engineering expertise. Turning an ambitious development programme into consistent results requires far more than individual talent or financial resources.

For Aston Martin, the challenge is to bring its technical capabilities, personnel and operational processes together in a way that delivers reliable performance on the circuit. Adrian Newey’s experience and Fernando Alonso’s detailed understanding of car behaviour could prove particularly valuable during that process.

Aston Martin must show patience as it develops its Formula 1 project

Despite the resources available to Aston Martin, building a successful Formula 1 team remains a long-term undertaking. Progress depends on continuity, effective collaboration and confidence in the people responsible for making technical and sporting decisions.

The team’s difficulties underline how quickly ambitious expectations can collide with the realities of competition at the highest level. Developing a competitive car is only one part of the challenge; understanding its behaviour, improving reliability and ensuring that every department works effectively together are equally important.

Adrian Newey’s assessment of Fernando Alonso offers an encouraging reminder of the expertise available within the organisation. The Spaniard’s ability to analyse tyre behaviour, anticipate changing race conditions and adapt his driving style provides valuable feedback for the engineers working to improve the car.

Aston Martin must now give its project the time and stability required to develop, rather than questioning its long-term direction whenever immediate results fall short of expectations. Maintaining confidence in the people recruited to lead that transformation will be essential.

For Fernando Alonso, the praise from Adrian Newey is another recognition of the exceptional qualities that have defined his Formula 1 career. For Aston Martin, the challenge is to transform that experience and technical understanding into a car capable of allowing the two-time World Champion to fight consistently at the front.
