George Russell has spoken about his emotions during the tense period of contract talks between Mercedes and Max Verstappen for 2026. At that time, neither Russell nor Kimi Antonelli had contracts securing their future with the team, which added significant pressure on their shoulders.
In August, however, Max Verstappen confirmed he would remain at Red Bull, putting an end to all the speculation circulating in the paddock. Despite this, it took some time before the Mercedes drivers’ contracts were renewed. It wasn’t until October that both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli officially signed extensions, with Toto Wolff confirming the continuation of this “young project.”
The 2025 season was challenging on track for everyone, with McLaren dominating from start to finish. Yet Mercedes also enjoyed several strong weekends, and the three podiums for Antonelli, combined with Russell’s seven podiums and two victories, testified to the team’s competitiveness. For this reason, the British driver “never doubted” his renewal, despite all the rumors surrounding the four-time world champion.
Russell speaks out
When asked whether he felt taken for granted during the Max Verstappen-Mercedes talks, Russell responded candidly.
“Yes, in a way, but I wouldn’t say it was because of the contract saga,” the 27-year-old said. “Sometimes it’s very simple. You feel appreciated if you think you’re showing your value, and you feel underappreciated if you don’t, regardless of ongoing conversations.”
“So the situation was resolved fairly quickly once we signed the contract. For me, it was simple—it wasn’t a distraction. I focused only on the races, and I think there are lessons to learn: no matter the outside gossip, there’s really no need to worry too much.”
“You can be the nicest guy or the most disliked, but if you get in the car and do the job, no one remembers or thinks about the rest—they only care about lap times,” he continued.
Russell confident in himself
Considering the entire contract saga, it’s even more impressive how consistently George Russell performed. He outqualified and outperformed his teammate for almost the entire season, eventually finishing fourth in the drivers’ championship.
“I don’t think I ever doubted, for example, how my performances would be scrutinized,” the British driver added, recalling one of his 2025 victories. “And I think Singapore was probably the weekend with the most pressure in terms of negotiations. Yet that was also the weekend I delivered my best race of the year.”
George Russell’s ability to remain unfazed by the Verstappen rumors demonstrates the mental resilience required at the top level of Formula 1. By focusing purely on his on-track delivery, he proved that results are the ultimate currency in the paddock, ensuring his place as the cornerstone of Mercedes’ future project through 2026 and beyond.
