New internal balance at Aston Martin
Adrian Newey explained that the team’s internal structure has now found a new balance, particularly after discussions around technical management and relationships with Power Unit partners. “To be honest, it quickly became clear that with the 2026 Power Unit challenge and Andy’s expertise in managing the three-way relationship between Honda, Aramco, and us, the knowledge was absolutely his,” Adrian Newey stated.
Why Adrian Newey chose to become team principal
He also revealed a key moment behind his decision: “With great generosity, he offered to be actively involved in the project during the first part of 2026.” This made Andy Cowell’s value in the critical early development phase even more evident.
With Andy Cowell’s role redefined and the Power Unit project in full swing, the question of operational leadership became central in recent weeks. “It left a sort of doubt: Okay, who will be the team principal?” Newey explained. This reflection on his own position eventually led to a natural decision.
Adrian Newey emphasized that becoming team principal does not significantly change his workload. “Since I’ll be at all the races anyway, this doesn’t particularly change my work, because I’ll be there regardless,” he said. “So it makes sense that I take on that part.” This demonstrates his full commitment to Aston Martin’s project for the new regulatory cycle.
A personal motivation and a promise to the team
He added a statement capturing his personal drive: “This is truly what I want and need to do. It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.” He also made a promise to the team and the fans: “I am determined not to let it down.” A clear reference to the 2026 project aimed at propelling Aston Martin to the top of Formula 1.
With Adrian Newey as team principal and Cowell still actively involved in the 2026 program, Aston Martin is undergoing a profound transformation—one that could reshape the competitive landscape of Formula 1.
The countdown to the biggest regulation change in a decade just got a lot more interesting.
