The British engineering genius reflected on the work he carried out alongside Max over the years, emphasizing the human and professional qualities that set him apart from other drivers. According to Adrian Newey, the current number one in the F1 grid has reached an extraordinary level of awareness and concentration, the result of continuous personal growth and a direct relationship with pressure.
Over the course of the season, Max has confirmed the talent he demonstrated after his fourth consecutive championship, climbing to third place on the all-time podium list with 123 podiums, behind only Lewis Hamilton (202) and Michael Schumacher (155). All of his triumphs came at the wheel of cars shaped by Newey’s technical genius, which the engineer described as “a rare synergy,” capable of enhancing their mutual potential and consolidating Red Bull’s winning cycle.
Newey: “Max Verstappen had a difficult upbringing”
“Max is absolutely exceptional,” the British engineer stated. “He did not have an easy upbringing, but his maturity is incredible. His ability to manage pressure, to absorb it, seems unique. Whatever happens in his life, when he puts on the helmet, all the noise disappears and he can just race. It is truly impressive for an athlete.”
Adrian Newey also recalled another champion he had the chance to work with, Ayrton Senna, whom he describes as “a pure and curious talent like few others.” “With Ayrton, unfortunately, the relationship was very brief. When he arrived at Williams, he wanted to visit the factory. I remember he immediately started observing every detail of the suspension, asking questions about each component. I had to be ready to answer everything. He had an incredibly sharp mind,” Newey recounted.
