The 2026 season could resemble 2014: in the paddock, some are already betting on Mercedes to dominate the championship as they did in the early hybrid era of Formula 1. Andrea Kimi Antonelli is among those putting faith in Brackley for the upcoming F1 season. After his debut year in the sport, the Bolognese driver is ready to consistently fight for the positions that matter. With three podiums already on his record, he is now aiming for his first career victory. The Silver Arrows are among the favorites in winter rumours, as all eyes await the first pre-season testing sessions.
Abu Dhabi marked the curtain call for the 2025 season. The championship remained open despite the huge advantage gained by McLaren drivers in the first half of the season, eventually nullified by Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s resilience and fierce competitiveness. For fans, there is nothing more thrilling than a title decided at the final race.
However, 2026 brings sweeping changes, and like every regulatory revolution, there is a risk that a new dominance could emerge. Back in 2014, it was Mercedes that inaugurated their golden era, which lasted until 2021, concluding with Max Verstappen’s victory over Lewis Hamilton. As the paddock speculates on the true potential of Brackley’s power units, Antonelli hopes history might repeat itself over a decade later.
Antonelli: “A season like 2014 would be a dream”
Speaking to journalists at Yas Marina, Andrea Kimi Antonelli shared his honest expectations: “I hope it’s like 2014. That would be a dream! But you never know. I think these regulatory changes are even bigger than those in 2014 because everything is changing, from the chassis to the aerodynamics. Still, I have full confidence in Mercedes and the work they are doing at the factory.”
The Mercedes driver continued to detail his involvement in the development process: “I’ve spent quite a bit of time there, observing the progress in the wind tunnel and the progress on the test bench. It looks promising, but we don’t know what the others are doing,” Kimi Antonelli concluded.
As the rumors surrounding the 2026 power units continue to intensify, the confidence radiating from the Mercedes camp is hard to ignore. Antonelli’s optimism reflects a team that feels prepared for the technical challenges ahead, yet the “unknown” remains the biggest rival. Whether Mercedes has truly unlocked a 2014-style advantage or if the expanded 11-team grid will offer a closer fight is a question that only the first lights out in 2026 will truly answer.
