Williams, the year of revival: 86 points in 16 Grands Prix. Between 2018 and 2024 it was 84
Competitive again
At the top of Formula 1 at the moment is McLaren, which has managed to return from its decline to become a dominant team once again in the Circus. But on the grid, there is another historic British team aiming to follow a similar path, rising from the ruins of a glorious past to re-emerge in the top positions: Williams.
The team that defined the first half of the 1990s has faced very difficult moments in recent years, coming close to bankruptcy and transitioning from the management of the founding family to the control of investment firm Dorilton Capital. Between 2018 and 2024, the team founded by Frank Williams finished last in the Constructors’ Championship on four occasions out of seven, with a ninth, eighth, and seventh place as other results. Clearly, this was not a record to be proud of.
A season worth seven
This season – the second under the leadership of former Mercedes Head of Strategy James Vowles as team principal – the team appears to have been reborn. Currently, Williams is fifth in the Constructors’ standings (its best result since 2017) and has already scored 86 points in 16 rounds.
This statistic is particularly significant because, thanks to the six points collected by Alex Albon at Monza, the Grove-based team has surpassed – in this single part of the season – the total points collected between 2018 and 2024, which amounted to 84. Special credit goes to Alex Albon, who is currently seventh in the World Championship with 70 points. New signing Carlos Sainz has only collected 16 points, but his season has been marked by several unfortunate events. What is certain is that Williams seems increasingly destined to climb the grid hierarchy, step by step, returning to a prominent role in Formula 1.
