Williams fall behind Audi in the F1 constructors’ standings

Alex Albon’s eighth-place finish in Monaco remains Williams’ most recent points-scoring result. Since then, neither Alex Albon nor Carlos Sainz has added to the Grove-based team’s total, and this prolonged downturn has inevitably affected its position in the constructors’ championship.

The change was confirmed at the latest Hungarian Grand Prix, where Williams surrendered eighth place to Audi. The German manufacturer, by contrast, has placed either Gabriel Bortoleto or Nico Hülkenberg inside the top 10 at each of the last three Grands Prix.

Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri incident sparks controversy

Williams’ difficult period was compounded by the controversy that followed the race in Budapest after contact between Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri.

The McLaren driver was attempting to lap Carlos Sainz when the two cars collided after the Spaniard failed to leave Oscar Piastri enough room. The former Ferrari driver received a five-second penalty and subsequently explained his version of events, although his account prompted considerable debate.

Alex Albon explains Williams’ weaknesses in Hungary

It has been a highly challenging season for Williams and Alex Albon, who finished 17th after a weekend that began with limited expectations.

“It was a difficult weekend for us, a real battle. We knew the track would not favour us and would expose our weaknesses. We had balance problems throughout the weekend and today we were heavily affected by the wind, with understeer and a lack of consistency,” Alex Albon explained.

“I struggled to find a rhythm with the wind changing and the gusts. We know what we need to fix, and I believe the work being carried out at the factory represents the biggest team effort I have ever seen to address these problems.

“I believe we are doing the right things to get back on track. It is just a shame to find ourselves in this situation. I hope we can get some proper rest as a team and return stronger after the summer break.”
