The Grove team has officially renewed the agreement with the British team principal: under James’s management, the team has laid the foundations for growth that brought it to fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship. The goal is to invest to return to fighting for a world championship that has eluded them since 1997.
Williams is investing in the future: James Vowles, team manager of the Grove team, has signed a contract extension, securing a long-term agreement. The Briton was appointed team principal in 2023 after deciding to leave Mercedes, where he was the highly regarded head of strategy in Brackley.
With the full support of Dorilton Capital, the fund that controls the team’s capital, James rolled up his sleeves to revive a historic team that had won eight world titles but had sunk to the back of the F1 grid.
James Vowles had to start a tough restructuring effort after admitting that Williams had an archaic organization that even relied on an outdated Excel spreadsheet for designing the cars.
He managed to convince Carlos Sainz, leaving Ferrari, to bet on Williams by pairing him with Alexander Albon, forming one of the best-matched driver pairings in F1.
The leap in quality is clear, as the team settled into fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship with 55 points—a score higher than the combined total of the previous three seasons. James Vowles intends to continue the Grove team’s revival, aiming for the world title that has been missing since 1997.
“I am pleased to have signed a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing,” James admitted. “I have felt at home here since the moment I set foot in the team. We firmly believe we can look to the future with confidence. Over the last two years, we focused on consolidating the team’s foundations: now we have built a platform to aim for success in the coming years.”
Matthew Savage, president of Williams Racing and Dorilton Capital, added: “We are thrilled that James has signed a new contract. He has brought experience, energy, and strategic leadership to the team and has the ambition to bring Williams back to the top step of the podium. We haven’t achieved that yet, but you can feel the desire to do well that fills Grove.”
