Williams has made a significant move to reinforce its technical structure by recruiting Dan Milner from Mercedes, bringing a wealth of experience to the Grove-based team as it continues its rebuilding process under team principal James Vowles.
The British engineer joins Williams after spending nearly two decades at Brackley, where he built an extensive career working across multiple technical departments. Milner will take on the role of Head of Car Technology, overseeing the development programs of the team’s Formula 1 cars and playing a central role in shaping the future direction of the FW48 and beyond.
Following a period of gardening leave required by Mercedes, Dan Milner is now fully operational at Grove. In his new position, he will report directly to technical director Matt Harman and chief technical officer Pat Fry, forming a key part of Williams’ evolving leadership structure.
This appointment represents a strategic addition aimed at raising the competitiveness of the FW48, a car that has faced several challenges since its inception, including issues related to excessive weight and overall performance limitations. Williams is counting on Milner’s expertise to help address these weaknesses and drive technical improvements across the board.
Dan Milner brings with him a diverse and highly valuable technical background. During his time at Mercedes, he worked extensively on the integration between the power unit and chassis, a crucial area in modern Formula 1 performance. He also led the transmission design department, contributing to one of the most successful eras in the sport’s history.
His experience at Brackley dates back to the Honda era, continuing through the Brawn GP period and into the dominant Mercedes years. Beyond Formula 1, Milner also expanded his engineering portfolio by serving as a senior designer for the INEOS Britannia America’s Cup sailing team, further demonstrating his versatility and technical depth.
“I am excited to join Williams,” Dan Milner said. “After 20 years working in Brackley, the time feels right to take on a new challenge. Williams has a clear and ambitious plan for the future, and I am looking forward to applying my experience and knowledge to help accelerate this journey and turn ideas into on-track performance.”
Technical director Matt Harman also welcomed the new signing, stating: “Dan brings with him extensive experience and strong leadership. He has led major research and development programs, including in power unit projects, and knows how to bring a team together to achieve its objectives.”
In summary, the arrival of Dan Milner marks another significant step in the long-term transformation of Williams Racing under the leadership of James Vowles. By poaching top-tier talent from championship-winning environments like Mercedes, Grove is signaling its intent to move beyond the back of the grid and reclaim its status as a front-running constructor. With the FW48 requiring urgent technical intervention to solve its weight and integration problems, Milner’s two decades of elite-level experience in Brackley will be put to the test immediately. For Williams fans, this hire represents another piece of the puzzle falling into place as the team builds toward the stability and performance required for the next era of Formula 1.
