Williams has confirmed that Alex Albon will remain with the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The Grove-based outfit has extended its partnership with the British-Thai driver, who joined Williams in 2022 and has since become one of the central figures in the rebuilding project led by James Vowles.
The confirmation comes at a significant point in Williams’ recovery. After making encouraging progress in 2025 and recording its best championship result since 2016, the team has endured a much more difficult 2026 campaign than expected. Williams has already acknowledged that even its planned Baku upgrade will not solve all of the FW48’s problems, but Alex Albon and the team have chosen to continue together and reaffirm their belief in the long-term project at Grove.
The announcement also settles one side of Williams’ driver line-up for next season while speculation continues over Carlos Sainz’s potential options for 2027.
Alex Albon backs Williams’ 2027 F1 project
“Since I joined Williams in 2022, it is difficult to put into words the transformation this team has undergone,” Alex Albon said. “One difficult year does not tell the whole story, and it gives me even more motivation to keep building and pushing alongside the team and our fans to achieve great things.
“Our story isn’t over yet, so now I am fully focused on doing everything it takes to bring us back to the positions where we belong.”
The 30-year-old played a major role in Williams’ progress during the 2025 season. A series of fifth-place finishes helped Alex Albon end the Drivers’ Championship in eighth position with 73 points, contributing to the team’s strongest campaign in a decade.
Alex Albon reaches historic Williams milestones
The partnership that began in 2022 has also allowed Alex Albon to establish a place in Williams’ history. At the Spanish Grand Prix, Alex Albon made his 96th race start for the team, surpassing Nigel Mansell’s previous record. He then reached 100 appearances for Williams at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.
That journey will now continue into the 2027 Formula 1 season, when Williams will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its foundation.
James Vowles praises Alex Albon’s leadership
“I am very happy that Alex and Williams can continue this extraordinary journey together,” James Vowles explained. “Alex has been one of the leaders of this transformation project from day one, and we still have a great deal of work to complete and goals that we are determined to achieve.”
James Vowles also underlined the high regard in which Williams holds Alex Albon, explaining that the decision to continue together reflects the mutual confidence between the driver and the team.
“Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid and understands better than anyone the enormous progress we have made over the last few years,” James Vowles added. “His renewal demonstrates how strongly we both believe in the direction we are heading.”
