Liam Lawson’s first season with Red Bull has started quite differently from previous ones. There’s no easy excitement, no statements that could be misunderstood. The team is determined to avoid the mistakes made in the past, especially those with Albon and Gasly.
For now, they are succeeding. The announcement of the end of the relationship with Sergio Perez, although not exactly a surprise, came quite late last year. This indicates that the Austrian team wasn’t entirely convinced about the decision they would make regarding the driver to partner with Max Verstappen for 2025.
Christian Horner: “With Liam Lawson, the process will be gradual”
This, in itself, is something to consider. It’s something that doesn’t put young Liam in the position of having too many expectations on him, and Red Bull is doing everything to keep it this way: “We are trying to make Liam feel comfortable. It’s important that he doesn’t feel under pressure. We need to make sure he takes the easiest path,” said team principal Christian Horner to ‘Sky Sport F1’.
“At the moment, he’s in the United States and will return to the simulator only next week. The process will be very gradual,” the manager said, according to ‘GPBlog.com’.
The team and Christian Horner are trying to build a shield around Liam Lawson, a defense capable of protecting him from any outside pressures and attacks. The New Zealander (who will turn 23 on February 11) still has everything to prove, and once he takes the wheel of Max Verstappen’s sister car, the first comparisons between the two will come swiftly and punctually, like mimosa in March (sometimes even early).
Perhaps it’s time to start practicing a little.
