Persistent rumors about a potential, sensational exit of Max Verstappen at the end of the season continue to dominate discussions in the Formula 1 paddock. The reigning world champion’s struggles to adapt to the 2026 cars and his complaints about a lack of motivation have not gone unnoticed by the leadership of rival teams. Toto Wolff directly addressed the delicate situation of the Dutch driver in an interview with the Japanese portal F1 Gate.
Max’s struggle: “He needs to enjoy driving”
The Austrian team principal offered an insightful perspective on the recent statements from the Hasselt-born star, highlighting the emotional and instinctive side of his driving style. According to Toto Wolff, Max Verstappen is a driver who deeply feels the sensations inside the cockpit and, to perform at his absolute best, he needs to experience genuine enjoyment and fun while taming the car. Observing the tension and nervousness during the first races of the season, this element of pleasure appears to be entirely missing at this point in his sporting career.
The doors of Mercedes remain closed
Despite showing understanding for the technical crisis currently faced by his rival, Wolff drew a firm line regarding Mercedes’ driver market dynamics. For the German team, the current line-up — combining the experience of George Russell with the enthusiasm of young world championship contender Andrea Kimi Antonelli — represents a solid and untouchable foundation.
For the good of the sport
The Brackley team principal also emphasized that it would be a serious loss for the entire motorsport community to see a talent of Max Verstappen’s caliber leave the tracks permanently. However, he firmly reiterated that Mercedes already has two exceptional drivers and, at the current stage, there is neither intention nor need to change the internal balance or hierarchy, effectively locking down the seats of the Silver Arrows for the foreseeable future.
