Time is moving quickly, and the 2026 Formula 1 season has already passed its halfway point. July marks the seventh month of the year, while the upcoming Belgian and Hungarian Grands Prix will effectively bring the first half of the championship to a close, if we borrow a football analogy.

As the summer break approaches, attention is naturally turning to the driver market. Over the past few weeks, speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future has intensified, with the four-time World Champion repeatedly linked to Mercedes and even McLaren, where some reports have suggested a sensational swap involving Oscar Piastri.

Alongside those possibilities, another theory has occasionally emerged: could Max Verstappen take a sabbatical from Formula 1 before returning at a later date?

Would Max Verstappen really step away from Formula 1?

At first glance, the idea appears difficult to believe. It is hard to imagine a four-time World Champion, still only 28 years old and widely recognised for his passion for racing, voluntarily stepping away from Formula 1 for a season before attempting a comeback one or two years later.

If the Dutch driver were to leave the pinnacle of motorsport and pursue other racing categories—such as DTM, for example—it would likely be extremely challenging to return and immediately rediscover the rhythm and demands of Formula 1 competition.

For that reason alone, the sabbatical theory seems unlikely. Yet in Formula 1, unexpected decisions are never entirely impossible.

Is the Red Bull partnership approaching its natural conclusion?

If the possibility of a temporary break is taken seriously, one obvious question emerges: why would Max Verstappen choose to stop racing altogether instead of continuing in Formula 1 while waiting for a better opportunity?

The most logical explanation would simply be a desire to bring his Red Bull chapter to an end.

Although the relationship between Max Verstappen and Red Bull remains professional, it no longer appears as harmonious as it once was. The team’s recent inability to consistently fight for World Championships has inevitably changed the atmosphere, while the Dutchman may also feel that he has already achieved everything possible with the Milton Keynes outfit after winning four drivers’ titles.

Another significant factor is the expected departure of his long-time race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, who is reportedly set to join McLaren before the end of his current contract in 2028. Lambiase has played a crucial role throughout Max Verstappen’s most successful years, and losing such an important figure could further influence the driver’s long-term thinking.

It is no secret that Max Verstappen is evaluating his future options. After years of dominance with Red Bull, he may simply be ready for a fresh challenge and a new chapter in his career. And if the ideal opportunity does not present itself naturally, the Dutchman could ultimately decide to create that opportunity himself—even if that means taking an unexpected route before beginning his next Formula 1 adventure.
