In the middle of the 2024 Formula One season, they became the team to beat, but something changed after that. In recent races, Mercedes has not been the same as the one seen at the Silverstone circuit and the Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, with Lewis Hamilton trying to explain the reasons behind their issues.
The team led by Toto Wolff, after some very positive months, has now likely fallen to the fourth-best team in the championship. This was evident in the Singapore Grand Prix at the 4.94-kilometre Marina Bay Street Circuit, where, due to a wrong strategy, Charles Leclerc managed to pass Lewis Hamilton without much trouble, finishing just behind George Russell’s car.
Mercedes, what’s happening?
So what has happened to the Silver Arrows in recent weeks? Lewis Hamilton tried to explain the recent problems Mercedes has faced. “I don’t think anything in particular has happened,” said the seven-time world champion.
“We simply brought an update to Spa that we didn’t use. Other teams, like Scuderia Ferrari and McLaren, introduced new parts in the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort and then in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, and that had an impact. We’ll have some updates in a few races, although McLaren seems to be too far ahead, especially regarding the wings. We just have to wait and see what advantage we can gain.” – the future Ferrari driver concluded, ahead of the United States Grand Prix.
It’s now a matter of waiting for the final updates from Mercedes to see if Toto Wolff’s team can re-enter the fight for a constructors’ title that is far from certain.
