Max Verstappen and Helmut Helmut Marko
Helmut Marko famously played a pivotal role in bringing Max Verstappen to Red Bull, offering him a seat at Toro Rosso at just 17 years old after his dazzling performances in Formula 3 with the Van Amersfoort team.
Max Verstappen never misses an opportunity to emphasize the importance of his mentor, as he did in an interview with Viaplay: “I’ve always said it clearly, even last year, and everyone knows it. He gave me the chance to start racing in F1. For me, he’s always been very important, almost like a second father. We’ve been through a lot of experiences together over the years, both good and bad. That creates a strong bond and loyalty to someone.”
The turmoil in March
In early March, however, Helmut Marko appeared on the brink of leaving Red Bull, with rumors of a suspension following an internal investigation. This led to the revelation of the “Marko clause,” allowing Verstappen to exit his contract if Marko were to part ways with the team—a clause included in the Dutchman’s latest contract renewal without Christian Horner‘s knowledge.
Max Verstappen voiced his support for Helmut Marko to journalists, and the situation quickly settled. Today, the former Austrian driver has resumed his senior role within the team.
Reflecting on the incident, the Dutchman commented: “Was Marko’s departure ever a real possibility? I don’t think we ever truly reached that point, especially since I had made my stance clear,” the four-time Formula 1 world champion stated succinctly.
