Italy is finally rediscovering the excitement of having one of its own drivers firmly in the Formula 1 title conversation, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivering a dream start to the 2026 campaign.
Still not yet 20 years old, the Mercedes youngster has enjoyed a sensational opening phase to the season, claiming three victories—remarkably all consecutive—across the first four Grands Prix and building a 20-point lead over his closest challenger, teammate George Russell.
FormulaPassion.it spoke with former Formula 1 driver Vitantonio Liuzzi, who remains deeply involved in the sport today in his role as an FIA steward, to discuss Antonelli’s explosive rise—something few expected to happen on such a scale in only his second season at the top level.
Speaking exclusively, the former Toro Rosso, Force India, and HRT driver had high praise for the young Italian talent.
“Antonelli had a very strong first Formula 1 season, although there were also several ups and downs. But no one has ever doubted his speed, and he continues to prove that in every race. Miami is a track that particularly suits him, whereas in Canada I expect a different balance compared to his teammate. Russell has had two or three races where he simply hasn’t been perfect.”
Not just an all-Mercedes battle: McLaren could be the real danger
Last year in Montreal, it was George Russell who took victory, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished third to secure the first Formula 1 podium of his career. This weekend, the British driver will be under pressure to beat his Italian teammate and avoid allowing the championship gap to grow even further.
Even so, Vitantonio Liuzzi believes it is still far too early to frame the 2026 title fight as a straight head-to-head between the two Mercedes drivers.
“In my opinion, there are absolutely the foundations for Antonelli to fight for the championship. Personally, though, I think the season is still far too long to start talking about winning the title. But Kimi will certainly be one of the contenders until the very end.
“Russell is still a very experienced driver and an extremely fast one as well, which makes Antonelli’s performances even more impressive. The fact that he’s often beating him badly, as I like to say, is fantastic. We can only be happy and proud to have an Italian driver genuinely fighting for the championship.”
However, Liuzzi—speaking from the perspective of someone who still operates within the Formula 1 paddock—is convinced Mercedes may not be the only team in the championship picture.
“The improvements we saw from McLaren in Miami concern me a little because they were beyond expectations. That could make them a very dangerous rival in the championship fight.”
While Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s rise has captured the imagination of Italian Formula 1 fans, the battle for the 2026 crown may still have several twists ahead—especially if McLaren’s performance gains prove sustainable over the coming races.
