As he nears the end of a Formula 1 season that currently sees him last in the standings in 23rd place with zero points, Valtteri Bottas is set to hang up his helmet as a full-time driver. However, his journey in Formula 1 might continue behind the scenes.
The Finnish driver, as confirmed by Toto Wolff, is reportedly very close to returning to Mercedes after leaving the Brackley team at the end of 2021.
The number 77 will serve as the primary reserve driver for George Russell and newcomer Kimi Antonelli, who is poised for his full debut in the top category following FP1 outings in Monza and Mexico this year.
In recent months, Bottas has also been linked to a potential move to Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. The Milton Keynes team is in desperate need of a reliable and experienced second driver who would not pose a threat to the Dutch superstar.
Between Present and Future
Commenting on this potential scenario in the Las Vegas paddock, the former Mercedes driver dismissed the idea: “I feel there are people at Red Bull who don’t like me for some reason…”
“I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s an option. That’s just how I feel.”
Regarding the more likely return to Brackley, the Finn confirmed ongoing talks with Toto Wolff: “We’ve talked. We’ve been discussing it for quite some time. Obviously, this weekend, we were focused on the race. But yes, those are kind words from him, and I’m sure we’ll meet again.”
“I want to explore all options, but looking at the situation, there are many positives. Returning to the Mercedes family would mean being part of a great team and a great brand that could create many opportunities for the future. So, it’s a really solid option for me. I’m truly grateful that they are willing to consider me for this role.”
