In recent weeks, the topic of power units for the upcoming season has once again become one of the hottest topics in the paddock. According to some rumors, someone is pushing for the return of the V10 engine in F1, even at the cost of delaying the debut of the new regulations by a year.
The reason behind this is the concern within Formula 1 about the new regulations. Some teams fear that the grid in 2026 could be very unbalanced, unlike what we’ve seen in recent years. Obviously, this is not an easy decision, especially with less than twelve months remaining until the new cars arrive, although the topic will remain on the table in the coming weeks.
Toto Wolff Sends a Message to Rivals
But why are some teams pushing for the return of the V10? Toto Wolff addressed this in an exclusive interview with motorsport.com, where, among other topics, he discussed the engines of the future. “Clearly, some teams are not at the level they had hoped for. It happened already in 2014. Now that we are close to the arrival of the new engines, I think some are afraid they won’t have a top-level power unit. That’s why the idea of the V10 came up. As far as we are concerned, we’re always open to discussions,” said the Mercedes team principal. “As for the future, the use of sustainable fuels will definitely be a key point. Whether it’s hybrid or turbo, we are open to any challenge as long as there’s a solid project behind it. The important thing is to sit down and discuss it together to find the best solution.”
Regarding the possibility of another engine revolution in 2029, Toto Wolff has no doubts. “I think changing everything in three years would be a sign of weakness for our sport. We’ve attracted a brand like Audi, and we are heading into a new era based on hybrids and sustainable fuels. Formula 1 must be a stable and reliable partner, capable of respecting the regulations. We must have a long-term vision when making certain decisions.”
