US GP – Mercedes faces its toughest challenge yet
The Formula 1 circus returns to North America for the first time since June, with the paddock heading to Texas for the nineteenth round of the 2025 season. The Circuit of the Americas welcomes the championship caravan for the second of three US races this year, and Mercedes arrives in a positive mood following George Russell’s recent victory in Singapore.
According to team principal Toto Wolff, the success in Singapore was no coincidence. “The result at Marina Bay was not a stroke of luck. The level of performance we showed across Saturday and Sunday demonstrates that we are finally reaping the rewards of our work on the W16,” Wolff explained.
Mercedes enters Austin aiming to consolidate second place in the Constructors’ Championship, maintaining a 27-point lead over Ferrari with six races remaining. “We also showed strong pace in Baku, and now we’re curious to see if we can sustain this trend across the American triple-header,” the Austrian manager continued. “The upcoming circuits are very different from street tracks, so we venture into partly unknown territory, but this unpredictability is what makes Formula 1 so exciting.”
Returning to COTA and the Sprint challenge
The Austin circuit, added to the calendar in 2012, has become a classic stop in the F1 calendar. Beyond the Texas allure, the Circuit of the Americas is a full test for drivers and cars alike, with its combination of high-speed corners, elevation changes, and slower traction sections.
“Austin is one of the most loved races of the season,” Wolff said. “The uphill first corner is breathtaking, and the entire track offers a unique balance between technical demand and spectacle. It challenges every aspect of the car.”
This year, the challenge is heightened by the Sprint format, the fourth of 2025. “The short weekend introduces an additional element of risk,” the team principal explained. “But if we quickly find the right balance for the W16, we can also take advantage of new opportunities.”
500 races for the Mercedes-AMG Safety Car
The US Grand Prix also carries symbolic value for Mercedes. In Austin, the team will celebrate 500 appearances of its Safety Car in Formula 1, marking the enduring connection between the brand and top-tier motorsport.
“We are proud of this milestone,” Wolff commented. “Five hundred races for the Safety Car are proof of our dedication to safety, technology, and engineering excellence. It’s a story of innovation and passion that continues today.”
With a recent victory and a growing technical package, Mercedes arrives in Austin determined to confirm its resurgence. COTA will be a crucial testing ground, to see whether the W16 is truly ready to compete not only for podiums but to challenge at the very top again.
