Red Bull recently announced the swap between Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson, which will take effect as early as the Japanese GP. Many figures in F1 have expressed their opinions on what happened at Red Bull, and the ideas are divided. What does Guenther Steiner think? Here are his statements on the matter.
Many figures from F1 and beyond have sided with Liam Lawson, who lasted only two races at Red Bull. It’s no secret that the Red Bull management is not very patient with drivers, and this latest episode has generated many criticisms of the Austrian team.
However, Guenther Steiner, former Team Principal of Haas, holds a different opinion, as he wanted to look at the other side of the coin. According to him, what happened doesn’t represent a defeat for Liam Lawson, but an opportunity. “No one has lost their seat in F1. Only the car has been changed. And I think it’s good for Liam: now he can drive with less pressure.”
Driving for Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen is not easy, and the significantly better results Liam Lawson achieved in the VCARB races show this.
Moving on to the other driver involved in the swap, Steiner talked about Yuki Tsunoda’s dual perspective. Yuki Tsunoda might have reached the point where his career can take off, but there’s a factor that could change things, and not necessarily for the better. “Yuki Tsunoda has long said he is ready and deserves this seat. He’s been in VCARB for over four years. And now you can see what he’s truly capable of when racing against a driver like Max Verstappen.”
“It’s an opportunity for him to continue his career. It’s also brave to take this risk. Because I don’t know where Red Bull will go with drivers if Honda leaves next year. And it hasn’t gone so badly for Liam Lawson either, he’s still young.”
