The Aston Martin Racing driver has been handed a 3-place grid penalty for the first Grand Prix he takes part in—presumably tomorrow’s Monaco race—for impeding another car during qualifying this afternoon in Monte Carlo.
The Canadian driver violated Article 37.5 of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations by impeding Pierre Gasly, driver for Alpine, while the latter was attempting to qualify for Q2.
Pierre Gasly encountered Stroll on the racing line at Turn 10, effectively ruining his chances of advancing to the next stage of qualifying.
The stewards for this weekend—Nish Shetty, Loic Bacquelaine, Vitantonio Liuzzi, and Jean-François Calmes—reviewed available footage, team radio, telemetry, and lap times.
After also hearing from representatives of both Aston Martin and Alpine, they decided to issue Stroll a 3-place grid drop. He had already been eliminated in Q1 with the second-slowest time.
For Stroll, when it rains, it pours: yesterday he had already received a 1-place grid penalty for impeding Charles Leclerc at the Fairmont Hairpin (formerly known as Lowes or the hairpin).
On that occasion, Lance Stroll cut across the Monegasque’s path, colliding with his Ferrari while Charles Leclerc was on a flying lap. The contact damaged the floor, diffuser, and gearbox of Stroll’s AMR25, all of which were later replaced by the team’s mechanics.
Tomorrow, with a total of 4 grid-place penalties to serve, Stroll will start from the penultimate position. Oliver Bearman, who received a 10-place grid penalty, will line up alongside him at the very back.
