Toto Wolff has warned Kimi Antonelli and George Russell that he would remove any Mercedes driver who allowed their rivalry to develop into another bitter conflict like the one between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. The Mercedes team principal is prepared to let his drivers race, but only while the team’s result remains protected.
Kimi Antonelli and George Russell frequently challenged each other on track during the opening part of the 2026 Formula 1 season, causing Toto Wolff more than a few concerns. The Austrian has consequently held talks with both drivers in recent weeks to establish clear rules for their battles.
Toto Wolff sets strict conditions for Mercedes driver rivalry
Both Kimi Antonelli and George Russell will be allowed to fight on track, but only once Mercedes’ overall result is secure. Toto Wolff is determined to prevent their competition from becoming as acrimonious as the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
The former childhood friends fought intensely during Mercedes’ period of dominance, with their relationship deteriorating as they competed against each other for Formula 1 world championships. Having already managed that difficult situation, Toto Wolff has no intention of allowing history to repeat itself.
“I won’t allow it,” Toto Wolff told RacingNews365. “It will never happen again to me or to the team. It is very simple: if a driver were to do something like that, I would get rid of him.”
The warning makes the consequences clear if either Mercedes driver places personal ambition ahead of the team. Toto Wolff’s position is particularly significant while Kimi Antonelli and George Russell remain direct rivals near the front of the championship, with the latest situation reflected in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings.
Toto Wolff backs George Russell after difficult run
Despite his uncompromising message, Toto Wolff also offered his support to George Russell following an evident decline in results and a series of unfortunate setbacks over recent weeks. The Mercedes team principal believes the British driver’s difficult period can partly be traced back to the missed victory in Montreal.
“In Montreal, he was leading, but then he retired,” Toto Wolff explained. “A victory would have left him with a different level of confidence for the races that followed. Then there was the engine problem, and it took an enormous amount of time to understand it. He lost two tenths as a result.
“After that, the pressure on him increased because he had started the championship as the clear favourite. But if there is anyone capable of handling this situation, it is George. He is a tough character, and I am convinced that he will turn things around.”
George Russell under pressure to reverse 2026 decline
George Russell’s recent difficulties have changed the complexion of his season after his strong start established him as the early championship favourite. Technical problems and lost opportunities have since placed him under growing pressure, while Kimi Antonelli has continued to strengthen his own position within Mercedes.
The contrasting trajectories have also raised questions about George Russell’s longer-term status at Mercedes. Toto Wolff nevertheless remains confident that the British driver has the resilience required to recover during the second half of the campaign.
Mercedes will therefore continue allowing its drivers to compete, but within firm boundaries. Kimi Antonelli and George Russell can fight for victories and championship points, provided their rivalry does not jeopardise the team or recreate the damaging tension Mercedes experienced with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
