Toto Wolff has issued an unusually forceful response to claims that Mercedes is favouring Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the Formula 1 title fight, describing those accusations as completely baseless and insisting that both of the team’s drivers continue to receive equal treatment.
Speaking during the team principals’ press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix, the Mercedes boss said anyone who believed the team was deliberately helping Andrea Kimi Antonelli at George Russell’s expense was “brain-dead”, sarcastically adding that such people would be better off watching the Teletubbies.
The comments came after a fresh wave of speculation on social media over alleged preferential treatment inside Mercedes. As often happens during a championship battle, conspiracy theories have resurfaced as one driver holds a significant advantage over his team-mate in the standings.
George Russell’s Malaysia retirement reignites Mercedes favouritism claims
The latest accusations followed George Russell’s engine failure during the previous Grand Prix in Malaysia. With only a few laps remaining, the Briton was forced to park his car at the side of the circuit, losing another 15 points on top of the other retirements he has already suffered during the season.
That zero, however, has to be viewed within the broader context of what has been one of Mercedes’ principal weaknesses this year: reliability.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli has also been forced to retire because of a technical failure during the season and has encountered several problems in practice sessions. One of the most notable examples came in Baku, where a fault cost him part of FP1 and FP2.
Mercedes customer teams have also experienced several reliability problems during the championship, particularly involving the electrical side of the power unit. The manufacturer responded in Austria with an initial update aimed at improving reliability.
George Russell’s retirement in Malaysia nevertheless came at the worst possible moment. Mercedes was already planning to replace his power unit, but the change was supposed to take place at the following race.
George Russell and the team had agreed to wait until Austin before fitting a new power unit, where Mercedes is set to introduce an updated turbo specification together with the ADUO. The intention was to concentrate all the resulting grid penalties into a single weekend.
The failure at Sepang instead forced Mercedes to install a new power unit already in Singapore. That triggered the penalty without allowing the team to benefit from the ADUO, which was not yet available.
Antonelli’s form adds fuel to social media theories
The debate has also been fuelled by Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s impressive run of form. His progress was already evident towards the end of last season and has continued this year, with the Italian regularly proving particularly strong in races when tyre management becomes decisive.
Combined with the difficulties and unfortunate incidents suffered by George Russell, that form has led to increasingly vocal claims on social media that Mercedes is favouring the younger driver.
Toto Wolff responded directly.
“Anyone who thinks that is brain-dead. I mean, it is completely nonsensical. We already had this in the past with Lewis [Hamilton] fans,” the Mercedes team principal said, referring to the controversy that surrounded alleged favouritism towards George Russell over Lewis Hamilton in 2024, particularly on social media.
“I don’t know what is going on! Do they think I have a button saying ‘George’s engine fail now’? Or that I disadvantage one driver compared to the other while we are fighting for the constructors’ championship? We have always had the mindset of giving everyone the same material.”
Wolff attacks social media conspiracy theories
Toto Wolff also criticised the wider social media environment that allows those accusations to spread.
“But I guess that is where social media has got to today. People hide behind their screens and then attack. There is a lot of polarisation and sometimes I read what people write. I find it hilarious. These people genuinely contribute to my entertainment when they insult the team or me personally. I am Satan, from what I hear. So yes, overall, it is funny.”
He then went even further.
“I genuinely have zero understanding or respect for people who come out with this stuff. Instead of watching Formula 1, they should watch the Teletubbies or, I don’t know, Mickey Mouse. Ever since I entered Formula 1, even in my Williams days, I have always tried to be as balanced and transparent as possible with the drivers.”
It is not the first time the Mercedes boss has used the children’s television show as a reference. Toto Wolff had already made a similar remark in Hungary in relation to another controversy.
Wolff insists Mercedes gives Russell and Antonelli equal opportunities
The Mercedes team principal stressed that there is no favouritism between Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, pointing out that both drivers developed within the Mercedes structure and have longstanding personal relationships with the team.
“I set myself the challenge of always maintaining balance. And it wasn’t easy with Lewis and Nico [Rosberg] at the time. That is why people can think whatever they want, but integrity in this respect is something important to me, and the drivers know that.”
Toto Wolff then explained his relationship with both drivers.
“We’ve had Kimi since he was 11. He is an integral part of the team. It is beautiful to see him grow, to now find himself in a position to fight for a championship at such a young age, with the talent he has.
“And then on the other side there is George, who has been with us since he was 17 — someone I have a lot of emotion and compassion for. We are very close. We spend time away from the track with [Russell’s girlfriend] Carmen and [my wife] Susie.”
He added that the personal relationship between the two sides is far closer than many outsiders realise.
“If people saw that we travel together, have coffee at the same café, go to the gym together… That is why it is quite annoying that there are lunatics, with absolutely no understanding of how human relationships work, who come out with these kinds of accusations.
“So I pay no attention to any of that. The most important thing is that George knows what the team is like, and Kimi knows it too, and we will always try to give them equal opportunities.”
Mercedes will not change its approach despite Antonelli’s title advantage
Toto Wolff also made clear that Mercedes will not alter its sporting philosophy simply because Andrea Kimi Antonelli currently has the more realistic championship opportunity from a mathematical perspective.
“Even if it is now more realistic for Kimi to win the championship in terms of pure mathematical probability, we would still give George the same opportunities.
“And that is important. It is the ethos and integrity the team has operated with since 2013, since I arrived. And we will continue to follow those principles. People can think whatever they want.”
The comments reinforce Mercedes’ public stance that both drivers remain on equal footing, even as Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s championship position becomes stronger and George Russell continues to deal with a season affected by reliability problems and lost points.
