The Spanish GP came alive in its final stages thanks to a restless Max Verstappen: post-race, criticism arrived from Toto Wolff.
Toto Wolff voiced a bold opinion about Max Verstappen at the end of the race. The Mercedes Team Principal thus drew criticism not only from Dutch fans but also from Italians. It all stemmed from the race finale in Barcelona. Verstappen’s behavior on track was not appreciated—here’s what happened and the self-destructive statement from the Austrian.
Max Verstappen – George Russell: the contact
After the Qatar incident in 2024, the two drivers found themselves at the center of controversy once again, following an on-track battle during the closing stages of the race. On the Safety Car restart, Max Verstappen struggled to control the car and went off into the run-off area at Turn 1. Upon rejoining the track, the Dutchman found himself ahead of George Russell, despite being behind him before.
To avoid potential penalties, Red Bull asked Max Verstappen to give the position back. A few corners later, while Max appeared to comply with the team’s order, the two drivers collided. The three-time World Champion received a ten-second time penalty and three penalty points on his super licence. Max Verstappen is now dangerously close to a race ban, sitting just one point away.
Toto Wolff lashes out at Max Verstappen
The Red Bull driver publicly apologized for the incident, admitting his mistake with George Russell. Nonetheless, criticism poured in—and in large volume.
“He’s overly aggressive. He acted like some taxi drivers in Rome or Naples. There’s a lot of aggression in Naples or Rome with cars, people drive without rules. This is road rage.” – he said at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
This was the Mercedes TP’s comment, given to Sky, containing remarks that were highly provocative toward Max—and especially offensive toward Italians.
