Mercedes wants to bounce back
A standout Saturday, a nightmare Sunday. That’s how Mercedes’ weekend can be summed up after arriving in Imola with hope and updates to convert into a solid result, especially thanks to the Q3 wildcard—securing third on the grid using medium tyres.
However, the race at the Santerno once again exposed the W16’s weaknesses in race pace and tyre management. That said, a car so skewed towards Saturday performance might fare well in the upcoming Monaco GP, even if this year’s race through the Principality’s streets will be shaken up by the introduction of a minimum of two pit stops and greater strategic variability.
Toto Wolff’s words
Team principal Toto Wolff was not pleased with George Russell’s seventh place and Kimi Antonelli’s retirement at their home race, and he wants an immediate comeback this weekend: “After a difficult race in Italy, we have the opportunity to bounce back immediately in Monaco. We’ll work hard, quickly and efficiently, to understand what limited us in Imola. It’s important we succeed so that it doesn’t happen again,” said the Austrian.
“However, we know Monaco is a very different challenge. Qualifying is absolutely crucial, and this year it has been one of our strengths. That’s encouraging, but it means nothing if we can’t do our job on track. We’ve seen how competitive Saturdays have been this year, and in Monaco the competition is always more intense,” he added. “We’ll need to be at our best to have a chance of fighting for a good result on Sunday. The two mandatory pit stops in the Grand Prix will add excitement to the race. We’re excited for the challenge and can’t wait to get back on track.”
