Toto Wolff believes Kimi Antonelli could still fight for victory at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix despite starting from the back of the grid because of a Mercedes power unit penalty. The Mercedes team principal admits the decision is painful for Antonelli and his home fans, but insists the championship must come before sentiment — while Monza’s long straights and powerful slipstream effect could create opportunities for a remarkable recovery.
Wolff can be uncompromising when the situation demands it. In his role as Mercedes team principal, the Austrian has little room for romantic considerations: Mercedes is fighting for both Formula 1 world championships, and the Italian Grand Prix could become an important turning point in the 2026 season.
Toto Wolff warns Mercedes cannot afford mistakes at Monza
“Monza and Madrid mark the beginning of an important period for us. The gaps in the fight at the front have narrowed so much that several teams can challenge for victory, so the price of a mistake can be much higher. We have put ourselves in a strong position in both championships, but everyone in our team is aware of how difficult the coming races will be.”
Mercedes remains in a strong championship position, with Kimi Antonelli leading the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ standings, but the increasingly tight battle at the front means every lost point could become significant.
Wolff did not avoid the biggest issue facing Mercedes at Monza. “For us, Monza starts with a challenge. Kimi will have to serve a penalty for the power unit change and will start from last place on the grid. It’s disappointing for him and for the fans who would like to see him fighting at the front in his home race, but our sport doesn’t reward sentiment. When you make decisions that benefit the championship fight, sometimes you pay a short-term price.”
Mercedes has deliberately accepted that short-term cost by fitting Antonelli with a fresh power unit, a decision that sacrifices his Monza grid position with the wider championship in mind.
Mercedes sets clear recovery target for Kimi Antonelli
The Mercedes team principal has no doubts about what Antonelli must now achieve. “The objective is clear: recover as many positions as possible and maximise the points. On the other side of the garage, George arrives in Italy with good momentum after Zandvoort and will be looking to put himself into the fight from the beginning of the weekend.”
Monza’s unusual characteristics will also make power unit management a major technical challenge under the current Formula 1 regulations.
“Monza is a circuit that generates little energy under braking; you spend a large part of the lap demanding maximum power from the power unit because there aren’t many opportunities to recharge the battery. With the current regulations, that creates compromises that will have to be managed carefully. It’s an interesting challenge and one that will probably lead to an exciting weekend.”
Why Monza could give Kimi Antonelli a chance to fight for victory
The Mercedes boss highlighted the difficulties presented by the Temple of Speed, but also the characteristics that could create an extraordinary opportunity for Kimi Antonelli as he attempts to charge through the field.
“Energy management will be a key factor, so both the engineers and the drivers will have to be extremely efficient. That could produce fascinating racing and open the door to different strategic approaches during the weekend. As always at Monza, the teams will work hard to achieve the lowest possible drag levels to maximise top speed on the straights.”
Wolff believes those characteristics make Monza one of the best circuits on the Formula 1 calendar for attempting a recovery drive.
“It will be a demanding weekend for the team, especially with Kimi’s engine penalty, but Monza is one of the best circuits on the calendar for recovering positions. The slipstream effect creates overtaking opportunities, so there will be chances for him to fight for victory.”
The possibility of a strong comeback will add another layer of interest to Antonelli’s first home Grand Prix as a genuine championship contender. Jackie Stewart has already praised the Italian’s performances and maturity, arguing that the passion of the Monza crowd could give Antonelli an additional boost as he faces the challenge of coming through the field.
Toto Wolff reflects on Monza’s unique Formula 1 history
Only at the end did Wolff allow himself a more emotional reflection on one of Formula 1’s most historic venues.
“Monza is a truly special circuit. The track is steeped in motorsport history and has a unique atmosphere that you don’t find anywhere else. Racing at this circuit is almost like taking a step back in time, connecting today’s Formula 1 with the generations of drivers and teams that have raced on this legendary track over the years.”
