In 2025, Andrea Kimi Antonelli became the third-youngest Formula 1 debutant in history, and his first full season with Mercedes unfolded under intense pressure and constant scrutiny. Despite the weight of expectations, one trait has stood out above everything else: his remarkable maturity. It is a quality that has impressed the entire team and highlighted just how professional the young Italian truly is.
While many eighteen-year-olds are still dreaming of getting their driver’s license, Kimi Antonelli was taking the wheel of a Mercedes Formula 1 car. His calm approach and composure have even surprised Team Principal Toto Wolff. Not every teenager can withstand the combined pressure of social media, global media attention, and experienced rivals.
Kimi Antonelli has been doing his best, and Wolff is convinced that he himself would never have survived at that age. At just eighteen, Kimi Antonelli earned his place thanks to his strong results in the junior categories, becoming the youngest driver to debut in a top team since Lewis Hamilton stepped into Formula 1 with McLaren.
The young driver from Bologna has openly admitted that his first “home” outing at Monza in 2024, during his maiden FP1 session, came with enormous pressure. That debut included an unfortunate incident that, as he later explained, stayed with him for months afterward — a mental weight he needed time to shake off. Even so, Mercedes senior management has praised his attitude and professionalism, especially when considering his age.
“I would say it was almost a three-phase journey,” said Hywel Thomas, managing director of Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, on the Beyond The Grid podcast while discussing Kimi Antonelli’s rookie season, which he finished seventh in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship.
“Because he arrived at the team and, of course, in the first races you think: ‘Wow, incredible that this kid with so little experience is able to perform like this.’ Then he had his dip, and the results stopped coming. And now he’s back incredibly strong. Really impressive.”
Thomas added: “And when you think about the fact that he’s managing all of this at his age… He’s very, very intelligent. He relates to people extremely well and he’s very, very mature. I have children his age and they are not that mature, I can tell you that for sure. They wouldn’t like to hear it, but it’s the truth.”
Wolff agreed: “The thing is that when we talk to Kimi we are brutally honest, whether things are going well or not. And then you remember that you’re not speaking to an adult. Kimi is more a kid than an adult. And you have to remind yourself that he’s only 19. Yes, he’s a professional in the car and he has been doing karting and racing his whole life. But in terms of maturity, we expect an accelerated growth that is almost too much. He’s been thrown into this world, and I think that when you look at some of the tougher races, he’s simply overwhelmed by the experience, with all the interest and media pressure.”
Toto Wolff continued: “He has an extremely fast and experienced teammate and he’s still holding his own. And I think this shows he has huge potential for the future, because as Hywel says, when I was 19 I was a bit of an idiot. I wouldn’t have been able to handle the pressures he is dealing with. And that’s why, when I talk to him, I’m a bit tough — and I almost have to stop myself and think: ‘Wait a second, he’s still just a kid.’ It’s an interesting lesson for all of us.”
From the nightmare FP1 crash at Monza in 2024 that haunted him for months to battling inside the points week after week in 2025, Kimi Antonelli has grown in front of the world’s cameras. And if the two most powerful men at Brackley are already this impressed, imagine what he could achieve when the teenage life really is behind him.
