Toto Wolff on Valtteri Bottas’s future: “Stay tuned”

Valtteri Bottas, 2024 F1

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team recently released a video on YouTube in which team principal Toto Wolff reviewed the first half of the 2025 Formula 1 season. While congratulating drivers George Russell and Matteo Antonelli for their performances, Wolff made a special mention of Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas, signaling hope for his continued presence in Formula 1.

“Obviously, Valtteri deserves a seat in Formula 1,” Toto Wolff said. “We hope that door will open. Stay tuned.” In the video, Wolff literally used the phrase “watch this space,” an English expression meaning to be ready for upcoming news or developments.

One team currently holding two open driver seats for the 2026 season is Cadillac Racing, which is rumored to be considering drivers such as Sergio Pérez, Valtteri Bottas, Mick Schumacher, and Guanyu Zhou. Could this be what Toto Wolff was hinting at?

Valtteri Bottas raced for the Mercedes Formula 1 team from 2017 to 2021, then spent two years with Alfa Romeo and one season with Sauber. Although his recent seasons have not been overwhelmingly positive, Toto Wolff chose to retain Valtteri Bottas as a reserve driver. Wolff commented: “He is the kind of driver who, if one of our drivers had fish poisoning, you put him in the car and he would be absolutely on pace. It’s fantastic to know that your reserve and third driver is the fastest one out there.”

As of now, no official announcements have been made regarding Valtteri Bottas’s future, but these statements certainly work in favor of the 35-year-old Finnish driver, whose main objective remains to return to racing full-time in Formula 1.
