Mercedes predicts a long-term peak for Antonelli
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has offered his prediction for young driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, suggesting that the 19-year-old will reach his maximum potential in three to five years. This means that in 2026, Mercedes does not necessarily expect Kimi Antonelli to compete with the very best in all 24 races of the season.
A rookie season of highs and lows
The 2025 season marked Antonelli’s Formula 1 debut, characterized by a mix of podiums and mistakes, moments of struggle alternated with excellent comebacks. Ultimately, finishing seventh in the Drivers’ Championship, just behind Lewis Hamilton, was a result in line with Mercedes’ expectations.
Preparation for a bigger role in 2026
For Kimi Antonelli, the 2025 season served as a preparation year, allowing him to experience every facet of the Formula 1 world: traveling across time zones, preparing the car, physical training, handling pressure, attending off-track events, interacting with the media, and much more. All these experiences are intended to make him a much more ready and competitive driver in 2026. Adding to this, Toto Wolff has helped ease the pressure on the young driver by setting realistic expectations.
Wolff’s perspective
“When do we expect him to reach his peak? Three to five years from now. And that is the timeframe we need to give him,” Wolff said.
“I think he already knows a lot about this sport, because it’s what he lives and breathes every day. But there is the human element, where you have to mature as a young man and handle the dynamics and pressures of this environment. But there is no doubt he is heading in the right direction.”
Learning ahead of the 2026 technical changes
The 2025 season also served as a learning year ahead of 2026. In a few weeks, the new technical regulations will take effect, and the updated cars will debut at the Barcelona shakedown. The new FIA-mandated cars will require drivers to adapt at least part of their driving style. Mercedes is glad that Antonelli has already had a taste of Formula 1 before this major change.
“What we know and what we’ve seen in the simulators is that next year the driving style will be different from this year,” said Hywel Thomas, Managing Director of Mercedes High Performance Powertrains. “There is a lot to assimilate, many new things, so it would be extraordinarily difficult for anyone to handle this in their first year.”
“That’s why I’m happy that Andrea already did a year of Formula 1 in 2025, very happy that he knows the team and is part of the team. He has visited Brixworth many times. We have gone through all the technical issues that will change. He is contributing. So yes, I am really very satisfied that he already raced this year.”
With patience from the Silver Arrows and Kimi Antonelli’s undeniable raw speed, the coming years could see the Italian emerge as a genuine championship contender once he fully matures into the demands of modern Formula 1.
