For Mercedes, the qualifying session in China was truly one to remember. When George Russell encountered technical issues, Kimi Antonelli stepped up and carried the team, ultimately securing pole position. Toto Wolff couldn’t hide his pride in the performance of his young talent. The Mercedes Team Principal also highlighted Russell’s ‘comeback,’ as the British driver didn’t let the Q3 problems get him down. He managed to set a lap in the final available moments and locked out the front row for Mercedes alongside Antonelli.
Wolff’s praise: “Kimi sets a record, but we expected this from someone of his caliber”
It was a historic day for Mercedes, which, following the excellent results of the 2025 season, may now have witnessed the full emergence of the talent that Toto Wolff has nurtured since karting days. “Many people said the kid was too young to be at Mercedes, that we should have prepared him differently, but today he proved his worth,” commented the Team Principal after qualifying. “What he achieved is a record, but we’ve expected it from him for some time. We’ll never know if George could have matched his time. Clearly, we would have loved to see a head-to-head with George to see how he would have performed, but I’m absolutely thrilled with Kimi’s pole position.”
On Russell’s problems: “We didn’t know if he would get back on track” and race expectations: “Watch out for Ferrari at the start”
Toto Wolff also addressed what happened to George Russell. The British driver was stranded on track during the first run, before returning to the pits and eventually getting back on track when very little time remained to set a competitive lap. “It didn’t seem to be an electrical issue with the Power Unit,” explained the Team Principal. “He switched it off and on three times, and on the third try it worked. I didn’t even think he would be able to get back on track, but I was surprised that he still managed to complete a significant lap.”
When asked about the expectations for the Chinese Grand Prix, Toto Wolff added: “Kimi will start from the best position and he and George will definitely battle each other. There will be tense moments, but it will be exciting. We’ll also see how the Ferraris get away at the start – they’ll push like crazy tomorrow, just like we saw in Melbourne. It’s going to be very entertaining off the line.”
The 2026 season is proving to be a masterclass in man-management for Toto Wolff as he balances a hungry rookie against an established championship leader. Kimi Antonelli’s record-breaking Saturday in Shanghai has silenced the critics who questioned his rapid ascent, but the real test lies in the 56 laps of the main event. While the W17 currently holds a clear power advantage, Wolff’s wariness of the “guys in red” is well-founded. Ferrari’s superior tire management and explosive launches could turn a comfortable Mercedes front row into a defensive struggle within the first few hundred meters. For Mercedes, tomorrow isn’t just about winning; it’s about proving that their new driver pairing can handle the pressure of a resurgent Scuderia without self-destructing.
