Valtteri Bottas closing in on 2026 Formula 1 comeback as Toto Wolff fuels speculation over his future
Although nothing has been officially confirmed, signs increasingly suggest that Valtteri Bottas may be edging closer to securing a return to the Formula 1 grid for the 2026 season—fulfilling a goal he has made no secret of since stepping away from racing duties.
The Finnish driver departed the Formula 1 grid at the conclusion of the 2024 campaign, a season that marked his most difficult yet in the sport as he failed to score a single championship point. His exit was largely triggered by Sauber’s strategic decision to sign both Nico Hülkenberg and rookie Gabriel Bortoleto for their final season before the team transitions into Audi in 2026. With no full-time seats left available on the grid at the time, Bottas was left without a race drive.
In 2025, Bottas returned to familiar surroundings by rejoining Mercedes, this time taking on the role of reserve driver. Mercedes strategist Bernie Collins has reportedly advised the team to utilise Bottas for media duties in place of young talent Kimi Antonelli, in an effort to reduce the growing external pressure on the 18-year-old as he continues his development.
Toto Wolff suggests Bottas deserves to be back in a race seat
During Mercedes’ mid-season review, team principal Toto Wolff discussed Valtteri Bottas’s current role and his potential future in the sport. Wolff noted that Bottas has been a long-standing and integral part of the Mercedes family and praised his reliability and pace, emphasising that the Finnish driver could step into a race seat at any moment and perform at a highly competitive level.
Wolff reportedly expressed the belief that Bottas deserves another opportunity to race full-time, hinting that such an opportunity may arise soon. The Austrian team boss even encouraged fans to “watch this space,” implying that developments behind the scenes could soon lead to a major announcement.
While Bottas manages his own career through a dedicated team, Wolff rejoined the wider group managing his interests in 2023, having previously stepped aside during Bottas’s stint as a full-time Mercedes driver. This reconnection has raised eyebrows and sparked speculation, suggesting that Wolff may have more influence over Bottas’s future than he is currently revealing. It also hints that plans may already be in motion, but are being kept under wraps until the timing is right for an official announcement.
What options does Bottas have for 2026?
Valtteri Bottas has been linked with several potential options for a full-time return to Formula 1 in 2026. Some rumours have even pointed to a short-term opportunity this season, should results continue to deteriorate for Franco Colapinto. While Bottas is reportedly open to a temporary seat at Alpine, his focus appears to be more firmly set on securing a long-term project—specifically, the opportunity to join Cadillac as they prepare to enter Formula 1 next year.
Cadillac will join the Formula 1 grid in 2026 as the championship’s 11th team, yet they have not yet confirmed a single driver for their debut campaign. It is understood that Bottas already has ‘terms agreed’ with the American outfit, although no formal contract has been signed to date.
With 12 seasons of Formula 1 experience, Valtteri Bottas brings a wealth of knowledge and racecraft that could prove vital for a brand-new team looking to build a solid foundation in its inaugural season. His combination of experience, technical feedback, and calm under pressure would be a considerable asset for Cadillac as they take on the monumental challenge of establishing themselves in the world’s most competitive motorsport.
However, Valtteri Bottas is not the only name on Cadillac’s radar. The team is reportedly considering several high-profile candidates. Sergio Perez, who left Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season, is believed to be under strong consideration due to his experience and marketability. Meanwhile, former Haas driver Mick Schumacher and Formula 2 rising star Jak Crawford are also among those being evaluated for a seat.
With competition intensifying and the driver market heating up, Valtteri Bottas’s return to a full-time Formula 1 seat in 2026 is not guaranteed—but with backing from a major name like Toto Wolff and clear interest from Cadillac, the possibility is becoming more realistic by the day.
